Yes. FFmpeg’s acrossfade filter can smooth the transition between rain recordings, while -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely. They solve different problems: looping alone does not crossfade the end of a file into its beginning, and neither option keeps a YouTube broadcast connected if the encoder, computer, or network fails. YouTube Live also needs a continuing video track alongside the audio.
What you need to make the stream work
Plan for three parts: rain audio, a video track that continues for the full output, and an encoder process that sends both to YouTube Live. The visual can be still, animated, or looping; make sure it continues for the duration and is compatible with the selected output configuration.
- Crossfade: transitions between audio segments so one recording can blend into the next.
- Loop: repeats an input after it ends. It does not automatically soften the loop boundary.
- Continuous broadcast: depends on the encoder process, host, and connection staying healthy. A loop option does not supervise or restart a failed process.
Crossfade a sequence of rain recordings
FFmpeg’s acrossfade filter transitions from one audio input stream to another over a chosen duration. Its options include the duration, whether streams overlap, and separate fade curves for each input. The documented example acrossfade=d=10:c1=exp:c2=exp demonstrates a ten-second exponential-curve transition; it is an example, not a universally suitable setting.
Choose the transition by listening
There is no single best crossfade duration or curve for every rain recording. Listen to representative clips and adjust the transition so it does not create an obvious dip, volume swell, or abrupt change in rain texture. The right setting depends on the source material and how different the recordings sound.

Build the filter graph for your inputs
For an ordered sequence, connect the audio clips through a filter graph with the required series of crossfades, then map the resulting audio stream to the output. The exact command depends on the number and duration of clips, their codecs and channel layouts, and how the video is produced. A one-line command cannot be assumed to work for arbitrary files and setups; test the graph with your actual inputs before using it for a live broadcast.
Loop a single recording without a gap
FFmpeg’s input option -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely. Put the option before the relevant -i in the command so it applies to that input. This repeats the file; it does not create a crossfade from its end back to its beginning.

If the end and beginning do not meet naturally, prepare a loop whose endpoints blend, or design a filter workflow that adds a transition at every boundary. Check the repeated join by listening to multiple cycles, not just the start of the file.
Use crossfades for transitions and mixing for layers
acrossfade is for moving from one audio segment to another. If you want several rain beds to play at the same time, use a mixing approach such as FFmpeg’s amix instead. Its normalization behavior matters: FFmpeg warns that disabling normalization can cause heavy clipping when the inputs are not normalized. Listen to the combined output and manage levels to avoid distortion.

Set YouTube Live encoder parameters
YouTube’s published live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data in transit to Google’s servers. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use the current YouTube settings page to choose a video bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, because the recommendation varies with those settings.
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps |
| 5.1 audio | 48 kHz sample rate and 384 Kbps |
| Audio codecs | AAC or MP3 |
| Video frame rate | Up to 60 fps |
These are YouTube’s published settings, not a guarantee that a particular machine, file, or network can sustain a stream. Match the continuing video and audio output to the configuration you choose.

Test the complete stream before going live
- Assemble representative rain clips and the video source you intend to use.
- Run the encoder and inspect YouTube’s ingest preview. Confirm that both audio and video arrive and that the image continues as intended.
- Listen through the preview and a viewer playback path. Check crossfades and loop joins for noticeable gaps, dips, peaks, or clipping.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages during the test and the live event. Testing helps surface issues but does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
Troubleshoot gaps, bad transitions, and dropped streams
- A gap or abrupt change at a clip switch: confirm the clips are connected through
acrossfadein the intended order and that the transition is long enough for those recordings. Listen and adjust the duration or curves. - A gap when one file repeats:
-stream_loop -1repeats the file without crossfading its boundary. Prepare a smoother loop or add a transition at the join. - Volume dip, swell, or distortion: reassess the crossfade curves and listen for level changes. For simultaneous layers, use a mixing workflow and manage levels; disabling
amixnormalization can cause heavy clipping. - YouTube receives audio but no continuing picture: provide a video track that lasts for the output and check that its encoding and frame rate suit the selected stream configuration.
- Ingest warnings or a disconnected live stream: check YouTube’s stream-health messages, encoder configuration, host, and connection. Infinite looping does not restart a failed encoder or restore a failed network connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
