YouTube scans livestreams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted music. If a match is identified and the content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. An archived livestream can also receive a Content ID claim after it ends.
What can happen when YouTube detects music?
YouTube says all livestreams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may display a placeholder image and warn the creator to stop using the content. If the matched content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. YouTube does not publish a detection probability for a particular track or hour of streaming, so there is no reliable percentage to apply to a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
If you choose to archive the stream, YouTube says Content ID claims on the archive are made after the livestream completes. A stream that ran without interruption is therefore not proof that its saved video will be claim-free. For continuous programming, the extended broadcast and its archive create separate points at which rights and matching matter; YouTube does not describe a distinct 24/7 exception.
A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright strike
A Content ID claim is an assertion of ownership on a video. YouTube says a claim itself does not result in a copyright strike. A copyright takedown is a separate process. Live-stream interruption or termination is also a distinct possible outcome of YouTube’s livestream copyright process, so the fact that a claim is not a strike does not mean a live broadcast cannot be interrupted. Why a music license may not prevent a live interruption
YouTube advises creators who have licensed third-party content to ask the rights owner to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a livestream may still be interrupted even when the creator has a license if the channel is not allowlisted. Confirm the process with the rights owner before going live, and retain the license and any allowlisting confirmation. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for both live content and any archive, including music rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. A purchase receipt or a description calling a track “free” does not by itself establish that the exact recording and composition are cleared for your use. YouTube says it cannot infer rights purchased elsewhere. YouTube livestream terms and conditions · YouTube Help: Tips to find safe music

Check music sources and license terms before streaming
| Music source | What to verify | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Original music | Confirm that you control the necessary rights to the composition and the specific recording, including any contributors’ or performers’ rights. | Originality alone does not establish that every relevant right is cleared. |
| YouTube Audio Library | Review the individual track’s use terms and any attribution requirement. | YouTube recommends the library, but track-specific terms still matter. |
| Third-party licensed music | Check that the license covers continuous livestream broadcasting, your intended territories, and any retained or archived VOD. Ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting for your channel. | A license may not stop a live interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. |
| Creator Music | Do not treat Creator Music licensing or revenue-share tracks as livestream clearance. | YouTube says Creator Music does not support licensing for live content; it is for long-form videos, not livestreams. Creator Music FAQ · Understand Creator Music usage details |
A pre-stream rights checklist
- Identify each track. Check both the musical composition and the particular recording; do not rely only on a “free” label or proof of purchase.
- Read the full license. Confirm continuous live broadcasting, relevant territories, and archive or VOD retention are covered. Check attribution and other conditions.
- Arrange allowlisting when needed. Ask the rights owner how to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist and get confirmation before the broadcast.
- Keep records accessible. Retain license documents, track details and allowlisting confirmation so you can respond if a claim or interruption occurs.
- Choose a source with clear permitted uses. YouTube recommends its Audio Library, original music and third-party sources whose licenses you have checked for where and how you plan to use the music.
Does a 24/7 stream change the rules?
The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a special rights rule for a stream merely because it runs 24/7: the creator remains responsible for rights in the live content and any archive. Longer or repeated broadcasts mean the content is exposed to YouTube’s live scanning over time, but YouTube does not publish a track-by-track or per-hour detection rate. Do not interpret a period without a warning as permission or assurance that the archive will avoid a claim.

StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping as a YouTube livestream from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It does not clear music rights or prevent Content ID matches, so use only content you are authorized to stream and follow the rights checklist above.
