YouTube’s live-stream guidance says a monetized channel can earn ad revenue from an unlisted live stream when monetization is enabled for that stream. Unlisted status does not itself prevent ads, but it also does not guarantee that ads will appear or that you qualify to receive a share.
Unlisted status and monetization are separate questions
An unlisted live stream is not publicly discoverable in the same way as a public stream, but YouTube’s live monetization guidance does not say that unlisted status alone bars ads. The relevant questions are whether your channel has monetization access, whether the stream’s monetization is on, whether you have accepted the applicable terms for the revenue type, and whether YouTube serves an ad.
There is a separate eligibility rule: watch hours from unlisted live streams do not count toward the qualified public watch-hour threshold for joining the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). That rule concerns qualifying for YPP; it does not mean an already-monetized channel is automatically barred from monetizing an unlisted stream.
What must be in place to earn ad revenue
1. Your channel has monetization access
To receive a revenue share, your channel must be eligible for the relevant YouTube monetization features. YouTube can show ads on content even when its creator is not eligible to share in that ad revenue, so seeing an ad is not proof that you will be paid. Check YouTube’s YPP overview and eligibility requirements for the current criteria.

2. Monetization is enabled for the live stream
In YouTube Studio, open the stream’s live control room or stream settings and check its monetization setting. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when live monetization is turned on. Mid-roll ads can be automatic or manually inserted. 3. You have accepted the Watch Page Monetization Module for Watch Page revenue
For ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live-stream videos watched on the Watch Page or embedded in the YouTube Video Player, YouTube requires creators to accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. Review YouTube’s monetization options and terms to confirm the module is accepted for your channel.

4. YouTube actually serves an ad
Turning on monetization does not guarantee an ad on every slot or for every viewer. YouTube’s system selects which available ad slots receive ads, and explicitly notes that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Revenue from a particular unlisted broadcast therefore depends on actual ad serving as well as your eligibility and settings.
Does an unlisted stream help you qualify for YPP?
No: watch hours from unlisted live streams do not count toward YPP’s qualified public watch-hour threshold. Keep that eligibility measure distinct from the ability of a channel that already has monetization access to earn from a stream with monetization enabled. YouTube explains the public-watch-hour rules in its YPP eligibility guidance.

What to check before and after the broadcast
- Before going live: confirm that the channel has access to the monetization features you intend to use, stream monetization is enabled, and the Watch Page Monetization Module is accepted if you are seeking Watch Page or embedded-player ad and Premium revenue.
- After the stream: check YouTube Studio’s revenue and analytics reporting rather than treating an ad seen by a viewer as proof of your revenue share. Reporting and ad serving can vary by stream and viewer.
- If your goal is YPP eligibility: use eligible public watch hours, not watch time from unlisted streams, when assessing progress toward the public-watch-hour threshold.
Does automatic mid-roll advertising improve revenue?
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour for creators who turned on live automatic mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not. The platform said this comparison was averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. It is a YouTube-reported comparison, not a guarantee or forecast for an individual channel or unlisted broadcast.
