Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYes. A YouTube livestream can be interrupted when it repeats a video that was previously “copyright-cleared,” and if YouTube removes the active stream for copyright, the channel can receive a strike. An earlier clearance is not automatically permission for a new live use. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the specific rebroadcast, and if the material is licensed, ask the rights owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist before going live.
What “previously cleared” does—and does not—mean
“Previously cleared” is not a precise YouTube policy term. It could mean that a Content ID claim was released, that you received written permission or a license, or that an earlier dispute or platform review ended in your favor. Those outcomes are not interchangeable.
- A released Content ID claim: shows that a particular claim was released; by itself, it does not establish that every later use, including a livestream, is authorized.
- A license or written permission: may grant rights to use specified material, but its scope depends on its terms. Check that it covers livestreaming and repeat broadcasts, the relevant channel and territories, and every included component such as music or embedded third-party footage.
- An earlier platform outcome: should not be treated as blanket authorization for a different upload or use. YouTube says creators need the necessary rights before disputing a claim or using the material.
YouTube’s guidance does not say that a previously cleared upload automatically authorizes a later livestream. If the meaning or scope of the clearance is uncertain, establish it with the rights owner before rebroadcasting.
Why a livestream can be interrupted even with a license
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. When a match is identified, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator to stop showing the material. If it remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream.

A license does not necessarily prevent this automated interruption. YouTube specifically advises creators who have licensed third-party content to ask the rights owner to add their channel to the owner’s Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that without allowlisting, a livestream can be interrupted even when the content is licensed. A live match or warning is not, by itself, the same thing as a copyright strike.
Match, claim, removal, and strike: the differences
| Event | What it means | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Livestream match or warning | YouTube detects material that matches third-party content during the broadcast. | The stream may show a placeholder and warning, then be interrupted or terminated if the material continues. |
| Content ID claim on an archived stream | YouTube says Content ID claims are made after a livestream ends if the creator archives it. | A claim on the archive is distinct from the live interruption process. A Content ID claim typically does not itself result in a copyright strike. |
| Copyright removal request | A legal request to remove content. If YouTube considers the request valid, it removes the content and applies a strike. | This is more consequential than a match warning or a typical Content ID claim. |
| Removal of an active livestream for copyright | YouTube says removal of an active livestream for copyright results in a strike. | The first such strike restricts livestream access for seven days; another strike makes the livestream restriction last 14 days. |
Do not infer that a match warning guarantees a strike, or that the absence of a claim on an earlier upload guarantees that a later livestream will be allowed.

Check rights and channel authorization before going live
- Identify what was cleared. Find out whether the earlier outcome was a released Content ID claim, a direct license or permission, a counter-notification outcome, or something else. Keep the relevant records.
- Review the permission or license for this use. Confirm that it covers a live rebroadcast and repeat use, the intended channel or account, the relevant territories and dates, and all third-party elements in the video. YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a universal license form; these are practical checks to establish that you have the necessary rights for the actual use.
- Ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel. YouTube names this step for licensed third-party content. Confirm with the owner that the correct channel is included before starting the stream.
- Check rights for the whole recording. A license for the main footage may not cover separately owned music, clips, or other material embedded in the video. Verify each relevant component.
If YouTube interrupts or removes the stream
If you receive a live warning or interruption
Stop showing the identified material while you check the alert and the rights involved. Review the stream’s status and any stated restriction in YouTube Studio. A warning or interruption alone should not be confused with a strike; check the channel’s actual strike status.
If the active stream is removed and a strike is applied
Check YouTube Studio for the strike and its consequences. YouTube says a strike can be resolved by completing Copyright School and waiting 90 days, obtaining a retraction from the claimant, or submitting a valid counter notification. A counter notification is a legal process, not a routine appeal: use it only if you believe the removal was a mistake or your use qualifies for a copyright exception. YouTube says it cannot decide whether you should dispute a claim; if you are unsure, consider legal advice.

If the archived livestream receives a Content ID claim
Read the claim details and distinguish a Content ID claim from a copyright removal request or strike. YouTube says owning a copy of a video or song is not a valid reason on its own to dispute a claim. Dispute only when you have the necessary rights or another valid basis.
Using a cloud service does not change copyright rules
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. It can loop a recording or playlist without leaving a computer running, but it does not grant copyright permission or prevent YouTube from enforcing its policies. You still need the necessary rights for the content and should arrange allowlisting for licensed third-party material.

YouTube says it received copyright removal requests for over 16 million videos in 2022. That figure counts videos named in requests; it is not a count of livestream strikes, valid requests, or the likelihood that a particular rebroadcast will be removed.
