Yes. You can loop a prerecorded video into a YouTube Live broadcast by enabling Loop on its OBS Media Source. OBS repeats the file in the encoder, which sends the resulting feed to YouTube; YouTube’s player Loop setting only repeats playback for an individual viewer and does not create a live broadcast.
How to loop a video on YouTube Live with OBS
- Create or select the live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or choose a stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.
- Set up OBS. Create a scene, add a Media Source, and select the video file stored on your computer.
- Enable the repeat. In the Media Source settings, turn on Loop. OBS describes this option as specifying whether the file plays again once playback has completed. The OBS Media Sources guide covers the source options.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS streaming settings, enter the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start and check the feed. Start streaming from OBS, check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, then click Go live if that is required by the workflow you selected.
- Monitor and end the broadcast. Keep OBS and the network connection running. When finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending the encoder feed. YouTube’s instruction is: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.”
For a playlist rather than one file, OBS also offers a VLC Video source that can loop a playlist. VLC must be installed for that source to be available. For a single file, Media Source with Loop is the direct option.
What “all day” does—and does not—mean
The loop setting repeats the source file; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. OBS, the computer, and the network still need to keep sending a usable feed. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings, previewing the stream, choosing quality that works reliably on the available connection, and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. Its encoder settings guide covers settings such as bitrate and resolution. The cited YouTube and OBS documentation does not establish one universal minimum computer specification.
Live broadcast, archive, and rewind are separate
- Live broadcast: YouTube’s archive guidance does not say a stream must stop at 12 hours. It warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as archives; streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. Those are archive qualifications, not a stated maximum live duration. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
- Viewer rewind: DVR lets viewers rewind during a live stream, but YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
If keeping a copy matters, retain a local archive rather than relying only on YouTube’s live-stream archive.

Common problems and fixes
- The video stops instead of repeating: Open the OBS Media Source settings and confirm Loop is enabled. If you are using a playlist, check the VLC Video source and ensure VLC is installed.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the selected Live Control Room stream. If the key has been changed, update OBS to match.
- The preview or stream health is poor: Test the encoder, review YouTube’s stream-health feedback, and use settings and quality your available connection can sustain. A loop cannot correct an unstable connection or an encoder that cannot keep up.
- The broadcast is interrupted over copyrighted material: YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. It may replace the feed, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. Even licensed content may require the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and use material you have the rights to stream.
- The live feed ran, but no full replay appeared: YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Keep a local copy if you need one.
