Yes—but only if closing the lid does not put the laptop to sleep, the encoder keeps running, and the network connection stays up. The lid itself does not keep a YouTube livestream alive: YouTube receives the feed from the encoder, so if the computer sleeps or the encoder stops sending, the stream can end. Check your laptop’s lid settings, then test the complete setup with the lid closed before relying on it.
What “loop stream” means here
A looped video on a YouTube watch page is not the same as an encoder livestream. For an encoder-based live stream, an encoder sends video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. The encoder feed—not whether the laptop lid is open—determines whether YouTube continues receiving the stream. YouTube says stopping the encoder feed ends the stream. If you want a prerecorded video to play repeatedly as a livestream, the playback software or service must continue sending that video to YouTube. Closing the lid works only if the laptop remains awake and the encoder remains active.
Keep the laptop awake when the lid closes
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Control Panel, then go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- For When I close the lid, choose an action that keeps the PC awake while it is Plugged in, if that option is available. Check the On battery setting separately.
- Select Save changes, then test the encoder with the lid closed.
Microsoft notes that many PCs—especially laptops and tablets—sleep when the lid closes. The available options can vary by hardware and manufacturer, so confirm the setting on your particular device. Microsoft’s instructions are at Shut down, sleep, or hibernate your PC.

Mac laptops
Closed-display requirements depend on the Mac model and the task. Apple’s general guidance describes using a Mac laptop with its lid closed when an external display, mouse, and keyboard are connected. Apple silicon may ask you to authorize accessories. For its specific M3 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro dual-display workflow, Apple also lists supported macOS versions, external input devices, and power requirements. Do not assume those M3 instructions apply to every Mac or every closed-lid setup. Check the current guidance for your model and macOS version: Apple’s accessory guidance and Apple’s M3 MacBook display guidance.
Connect the required display and accessories, supply power if the model’s instructions require it, and test the encoder with the lid shut. A dock may help provide display and peripheral connections, but verify compatibility with your Mac; it does not by itself prevent sleep.

Test the stream in the closed-lid configuration
Do not rely on a test with the lid open. Run the entire setup as you intend to use it, including the same power source, network, encoder, and lid position.
- Start the encoder and confirm that YouTube receives its feed and shows a healthy preview.
- Close the lid and verify that the encoder is still running and YouTube continues receiving video and audio.
- Check the live event from the channel or watch page, and if practical from a mobile device or another browser.
- Confirm that any local recording or archive you rely on is being created, and keep monitoring audio and video quality.
- For a scheduled event, YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. These are planning instructions, not a guarantee that a laptop will stay online.

Power, network, heat, and stream duration
- Power: Use the plugged-in lid action for a long run where available. A stream can stop if the laptop runs out of battery, loses power, or shuts down.
- Network: A wired connection is an option if you can use one. YouTube says hard-wiring may help compared with Wi-Fi, but it does not prevent sleep or guarantee an uninterrupted stream. See YouTube’s system guidance.
- Heat and placement: Make sure the laptop’s vents are not obstructed and that its operating conditions suit the closed-lid setup. Requirements and behavior vary by model; test rather than assuming the machine will remain stable unattended.
- Archive expectations: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is platform guidance, not a promise that the laptop, encoder, or connection will run reliably for that long. See YouTube’s encoder setup page.

When a laptop is not the right way to keep a loop running
If you need the computer itself to be off, a laptop-based encoder is not suitable: it must stay awake and keep sending the feed. You can instead assess a cloud service or standalone hardware encoder for the specific prerecorded loop and YouTube workflow you need. YouTube describes software and hardware encoder options at its encoder overview and gives examples of hardware encoders at its encoder setup page. Those examples are not comparative performance endorsements, and there is no basis here to claim one architecture is categorically more reliable.
