Yes—using YouTube Live and free OBS Studio software, a church can stream prerecorded sermons without paying for a streaming-software subscription or host. But “free” does not mean cost-free: the setup uses electricity, internet data and a computer, and someone must keep it running. A continuous 24/7 channel also needs a plan for interruptions, YouTube’s archive limit and copyright clearance.
What the free setup requires
YouTube’s encoder workflow accepts a live feed from software such as OBS Studio. OBS is free and open source, and its Media Source can loop a video. A church can therefore play a prerecorded sermon or a playlist as a YouTube livestream using equipment it already has.
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming available and no current live-stream restriction.
- A computer capable of running OBS and playing the video reliably.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen stream bitrate.
- Permission to use every element in the program, including sermon audio, music, lyrics, images and video clips.
YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and activate the feature before scheduling the first broadcast; do not assume it will be available immediately. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live-streaming tips.
How to loop sermons with OBS and YouTube Live
- Prepare the channel. Verify the church’s YouTube channel, check that live streaming is enabled and confirm the channel has no live-stream restrictions. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Prepare the program. Put the prerecorded sermon video or videos on the computer. In OBS, add a Media Source for a video and enable looping, or arrange sources into a playlist-style sequence. Check that both picture and sound play as intended. OBS’s free software and documentation are available at obsproject.com.
- Create the broadcast in YouTube. Open YouTube Live Control Room, create a stream and copy its stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream details. Keep the stream key private: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to the channel. YouTube also supports RTMPS, an encrypted transport option for compatible encoders.
- Check the connection and preview. Start sending the feed from OBS, then use YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators to check the incoming picture and audio before making the broadcast public. Test over the church’s actual internet connection, not only on a different network.
- Start and supervise the stream. Begin the live broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room when the preview is ready. For a truly continuous schedule, someone still needs to watch for power, computer, network or platform interruptions and restart the feed when necessary.
Choose a bitrate the church connection can sustain
The upload connection must be faster than the stream’s outgoing bitrate, with spare capacity for variation and other network use. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth available as headroom. For example, a connection that can reliably upload only about as much as the encoder is sending leaves too little margin for fluctuations. Measure and test from the church’s location, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. The recommendation is from YouTube’s network guidance; it does not establish the speed or data price available from a particular Indian internet provider.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There is no single bitrate suitable for every church connection: the right setting depends on the video resolution, encoder output and stable upload capacity. If the feed buffers or stream health degrades, lower the output bitrate or resolution and test again rather than running at the edge of the connection. A wired connection and avoiding heavy simultaneous uploads can also reduce avoidable network competition.
Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
A single broadcast is not a dependable way to archive an all-day channel. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a continuous schedule, divide programming into streams shorter than 12 hours and deliberately start the next segment. If the church needs a permanent copy of each sermon, keep a local recording rather than relying on the livestream replay. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Clear the rights to the whole program
A religious service is not automatically exempt from copyright rules. Sermons may include worship songs, backing tracks, lyrics, photographs, slides or third-party clips, and each may have a separate rights holder. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content; it can replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it or terminate it. Even when a church has a licence, a rights holder may need to allowlist the channel in Content ID to prevent an automated interruption.
Before scheduling a playlist, confirm that the church has permission for all included audio and visuals to be streamed on YouTube. A licence to perform a song in person, for example, should not be assumed to cover an online broadcast. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and its Terms of Service. A copyright interruption can occur even when the technical setup is working normally.

What “free” really means for an Indian church
OBS has no purchase or subscription charge, and YouTube’s encoder workflow does not identify a per-stream fee. Those facts make this a no-subscription route, not a zero-cost operation. Electricity, internet service and data still cost money; a suitable computer and audio/video equipment may also be needed if the church does not already have them. YouTube’s guidance says expensive equipment is not necessary to begin, so existing equipment can be a practical starting point.
Actual broadband speed, reliability and pricing vary by location and provider. There is no universal India-specific data-cost figure that can establish what a particular church will pay. Measure the connection where the stream will run and account for the extra data involved in sending video continuously.

When free OBS is the right choice—and when it is not
The OBS route avoids a streaming-host subscription, but the church owns the operational work. A local computer must stay on, the church connection and power must hold, and someone needs to respond to failures. Neither OBS nor YouTube can guarantee the church’s electricity, broadband or round-the-clock monitoring.
If the church has a dependable computer and connection and people available to supervise it, OBS can be a sensible low-cash-cost option. If keeping equipment running at the church is the hard part, a cloud service is an alternative; compare the recurring price with local power, internet and staff needs. StreamNeo is #1 among the cloud options described here: it keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos in the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.

Common problems and practical fixes
- Live streaming is not available yet: the channel may not be verified or first-time activation may still be processing. Check YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- The stream buffers or loses quality: upload bandwidth may be insufficient or unstable. Test on the church connection, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and reduce the encoder bitrate or resolution if needed.
- OBS shows a feed but the YouTube preview is wrong: confirm the selected stream key and URL, check the Media Source’s playback and loop settings, and verify audio routing before starting the public broadcast. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- The livestream is interrupted despite a valid connection: check YouTube’s notices for a copyright match or other policy issue. Review permissions for every element and, where content is licensed, ask the rights holder whether the channel must be allowlisted in Content ID.
- The replay is missing after an all-day broadcast: YouTube may not capture streams that exceed 12 hours. Use shorter segments and retain a local recording when an archive matters.
- The stream stops while nobody is present: a local setup depends on power, the computer, broadband and operational oversight. Arrange someone to check it and restart the feed, or consider a cloud service if the church cannot keep local equipment running.
Can livestreams help cover the cost?
YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live-stream revenue features, subject to channel eligibility and settings. Availability is not guaranteed, and these features should not be treated as a dependable way to cover electricity, data or equipment costs. Current eligibility details can depend on the channel and region; check YouTube’s monetization guidance.
