Yes, in principle—but a Raspberry Pi 5 is not a proven plug-and-play 24/7 streaming appliance. It can run a software encoder that loops local video into YouTube Live, but available specifications and performance notes do not establish that a particular Pi, file, cooling setup, and internet connection will run reliably all day. Test the exact workload before relying on it.
What the Raspberry Pi 5 can—and cannot—do
YouTube accepts live video sent from an encoder. A Pi 5 can run software that repeatedly plays local videos and sends the resulting stream to YouTube, so the basic workflow is feasible.
The important hardware distinction is that Raspberry Pi documents H.265 (HEVC) hardware decoding on the Pi 5. That is not evidence of a hardware H.264 encoder. Raspberry Pi’s indexed performance note reports that a single CPU core can software-encode 1080p at 30 fps in real time. That figure is a vendor-published result, not an independent test of a continuous YouTube loop; it does not establish all-day stability.
For a simple playlist, avoid unnecessary transcoding if your chosen playback-and-streaming workflow permits it. Start with a modest output such as 720p30 or 1080p30, then test the actual videos, motion, audio, resolution, and frame rate you intend to broadcast. There is no established Pi 5 configuration or runtime guarantee for this specific use.

Check YouTube Live eligibility first
Before configuring the Pi, confirm the channel can go live. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours.
In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Use YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint when available for encrypted transmission, and do not publish or share the key.

Choose a stream profile YouTube can receive
YouTube’s published 2026 guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported codecs, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). It advises matching stream quality to the connection and testing upload speed. Its H.264 bitrate reference points include:
| Output | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps minimum; 4 Mbps recommended |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps minimum; 3 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 5 Mbps recommended |
These are YouTube’s published settings, not a guarantee that your home connection can sustain the chosen rate. Leave headroom for network variation and other household traffic. In YouTube Studio, watch stream-health messages during testing; a nominally sufficient speed test alone does not prove a stable broadcast.

Build and validate the looping setup
- Prepare the media. Put the videos in the order you want them to play and verify that both picture and audio work. Use only material the channel has rights to stream.
- Choose the encoder workflow. Use software on the Pi that can play local files repeatedly and send a continuous RTMP or RTMPS stream. The available evidence does not establish a specific Pi command, application, or configuration as a guaranteed solution.
- Set a conservative output. Begin at 720p30 or 1080p30, with H.264, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Set bitrate in line with YouTube’s guidance and the upload connection you have measured.
- Connect to YouTube. Enter the server URL and stream key from the live-stream setup in YouTube Studio. Start a private or otherwise suitable test first, if available to your channel, and confirm that YouTube receives the picture and sound.
- Run a prolonged test of the real playlist. Monitor CPU load and temperature, dropped frames, network stability, audio, and YouTube stream health. A short clip may not reveal a problem that appears during a longer run.
- Only then schedule the all-day run. Keep a way to check the Pi and Studio status, and decide how you will respond if the encoder, power, network, or YouTube connection fails.
Children’s content: audience settings, copyright, and monetization
Set the audience accurately
YouTube requires creators to say whether content is Made for Kids, regardless of location. Set this in YouTube Studio based on the content; YouTube cautions creators not to rely on automated systems to classify it.
For a Made for Kids live stream, YouTube disables live chat and chat replay, comments on stream archives and upcoming streams, Super Chat, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may be shown.

Rights to stream are not the same as monetization eligibility
Use video and audio the channel has permission to broadcast. YouTube identifies an active copyright strike or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast as reasons live streaming may be restricted. Separately, highly repetitive or reused content may fail YouTube Partner Program monetization review. Having a lawful copy or permission to stream does not by itself establish that a channel will qualify for monetization.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know the archive limit before you rely on recordings
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise that a single stream longer than 12 hours will be archived. If you need a saved recording, do not assume one uninterrupted all-day broadcast will produce it; plan around the documented limit and check current behavior in YouTube Studio.

When the Pi is not the right fit
The Pi approach gives you local control, but the stream depends on the Pi’s sustained software-encoding workload, power, cooling, and home uplink. A cloud service listed by YouTube for continuous prerecorded video or dedicated hardware with scheduled prerecorded-media support may suit a different setup. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud option for 24/7 prerecorded streams and AJA HELO Plus as hardware that can schedule prerecorded media; that listing is not an endorsement. Compare approaches on ongoing cost, local control, recovery after interruptions, monitoring needs, and whether uninterrupted archiving matters.
