YouTube’s published live-streaming eligibility rules do not list a public channel as a requirement, and YouTube lets eligible creators set an individual live stream to private. That does not guarantee access for every account: check your channel’s status in YouTube Studio, and distinguish channel visibility from the privacy setting for a particular stream.
Does a private channel qualify for YouTube live streaming?
YouTube’s general requirements focus on channel verification, recent live-streaming restrictions, and age—not whether the channel is public. Its help pages also explicitly offer private as a visibility option for an individual stream. Taken together, those rules indicate that a public channel is not a stated prerequisite. They do not expressly guarantee eligibility for every private, hidden, supervised, or otherwise restricted account, so treat Studio’s account-specific status as decisive.
YouTube’s current general guidance, checked on October 3, 2026, says creators must be at least 16, verify their channel, and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance. Country-specific age rules, account supervision, device availability, and account-level enforcement may also affect an individual creator.
Channel visibility and stream privacy are different
A channel’s discoverability is not the same setting as the audience for a particular live broadcast. YouTube’s stream controls offer public, private, and unlisted visibility. A private stream is limited to the creator and people selected for sharing; an unlisted stream can be watched by anyone with its link, and that link can be shared onward. Public streams can be broadly discovered. The choice controls who can watch the stream; it does not replace the account’s eligibility checks. Read YouTube’s live-stream privacy settings.

| Setting | Who can watch | Link and discovery |
|---|---|---|
| Private | The uploader and selected people | Not publicly discoverable; access is restricted to selected viewers. |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link | Generally absent from search and the channel’s public listings, but the link can be reshared. |
| Public | Anyone | Can be discovered broadly on YouTube. |
For ordinary uploaded videos, YouTube likewise says private videos and playlists are visible only to the uploader and selected people, while anyone with an unlisted link can watch. Private videos do not appear in the channel’s Videos tab or YouTube search. These video definitions help explain the terms but do not create a separate channel-level live eligibility rule. Details are in YouTube’s privacy settings help.
Eligibility depends on how you plan to stream
Mobile streaming
Mobile live streaming has extra requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, live streaming enabled, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a supported device. YouTube’s listed minimums are Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. The 50-subscriber threshold applies to mobile streaming; do not assume it applies to every other method. Check YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements.

For mobile channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may limit the audience and set archived streams to private by default. Reaching 1,000 subscribers does not necessarily remove the audience limit immediately; YouTube says lifting it can take several weeks. These are mobile-specific qualifications, not a general rule that all streams from smaller channels are private. See the mobile live-streaming help page.
Webcam on a computer
YouTube’s webcam workflow uses a computer rather than the mobile app. After enabling live streaming, sign in, open Go Live in Live Control Room, choose Webcam, select the stream’s privacy, check the webcam and microphone, then start the broadcast. YouTube’s setup page lists Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+; browser support can change, so confirm the current requirements on YouTube’s webcam streaming page.

Encoder or console
YouTube also supports streaming through an encoder or game console. Its guidance describes encoder use for setups such as gameplay, overlays, and external equipment including microphones, cameras, and preamps. Requirements still include the general account checks; see YouTube’s live-streaming overview and available ways to live stream.
How to check and enable live streaming
- Verify the channel. Follow the verification flow linked from YouTube’s Get started with live streaming page.
- Enable live streaming. Complete YouTube’s activation steps for the channel. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours before concluding that the feature is unavailable.
- Choose a route. If streaming on mobile, confirm the 50-subscriber minimum and supported device. Webcam, encoder, and console routes have their own setup paths.
- Check Studio for restrictions. Look for channel warnings or a live-stream restriction notice. A private channel or private stream setting does not override a restriction.
- Set the stream’s audience. Choose private, unlisted, or public in the stream setup. YouTube’s pages describe age-related defaults differently across routes, so select the intended setting directly rather than relying on a default.
Why live streaming may be unavailable
- The channel is not verified or live streaming is not activated: finish the setup and allow the first activation period to complete.
- You are trying to stream from mobile without meeting its requirements: check subscriber count, device support, verification, and activation status. The mobile threshold does not by itself establish eligibility for other routes.
- The account has an active restriction: YouTube can suspend live access temporarily or permanently for policy-related reasons, including Community Guidelines or copyright matters. YouTube says a strike results in a 14-day live-streaming restriction. Check the notice and the restriction guidance at YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions help.
- You are considering another channel to bypass a restriction: do not do this. YouTube describes using another channel to evade an active restriction as circumvention, which can lead to account termination.
If your channel meets the published requirements but the feature still does not appear, the account’s Studio status and any displayed enforcement notice are more relevant than the channel’s public/private appearance.

Privacy and rights still matter for documentary streams
A private audience does not make copyrighted or policy-restricted material exempt from YouTube’s rules. If YouTube has restricted live streaming on the account, changing stream visibility or switching channels is not a workaround. Before broadcasting documentary footage, music, interviews, or other third-party material, make sure you have the rights or permission needed for your use and review YouTube’s applicable policies.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded documentary videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than broadcast a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. YouTube account eligibility and its stream privacy controls still apply.
