Possibly—but a $5 price tag alone cannot tell you whether a VPS can carry an Nginx RTMP stream around the clock. It may be adequate for relaying an already-encoded stream if the plan provides enough outbound data, sustained network capacity, and a compatible NGINX RTMP module. Encoding or transcoding on the VPS is a different workload and needs separate testing.
What determines whether a $5 VPS can keep the stream running?
The first distinction is what the VPS is doing. A relay forwards a stream that has already been encoded. The nginx-rtmp-module directives reference documents the push directive for publishing to a remote server. It also describes exec_push, which can launch an external process such as FFmpeg, including for transcoding. Once the server is encoding, transcoding, or compositing video, do not assume the resource needs are those of a simple relay.
Price is not a reliability specification. Before choosing any low-cost VPS, verify its included outbound transfer, sustained network policy, fair-use terms, overage or throttling rules, renewal price, and route to the YouTube ingest endpoint you will use. No particular $5 plan is established here as suitable, and there is no universal CPU or RAM minimum supported by the available evidence.
How much monthly transfer does a 24/7 stream use?
For a constant bitrate, estimated traffic is bitrate multiplied by elapsed seconds and divided by eight. The table uses 30 days and decimal units; these are calculations from YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not YouTube-published traffic statistics. Actual usage can be higher because of audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and other traffic.

For example, a plan that includes less than the estimated 3.24 TB for a continuous 10 Mbps video stream is not a safe fit on transfer allowance alone. Budget above the video-only estimate, then check the provider’s exact terms: included data can be subject to throttling, fair-use policies, or overage charges. The estimates are decimal TB, not binary TiB.
YouTube’s recommended encoder settings specify H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum four-second interval. The bitrate recommendations shown above are for the stated resolutions and frame rates. Use the recommendation that matches your output rather than assuming a more expensive or higher-capacity VPS will fix incorrect encoder settings.

What to verify before buying or configuring the VPS
- Decide whether it relays or encodes. Confirm that your input is already encoded if the VPS is intended only to forward it. If FFmpeg or another process will transform video, treat that as a separate workload and test it on the actual plan.
- Choose the stream format and calculate transfer. Select the intended resolution and frame rate, use YouTube’s corresponding bitrate recommendation, and compare a full 30-day estimate plus overhead with the provider’s actual outbound allowance.
- Read the plan terms. Check sustained upload/network policy, fair-use limits, throttling, overage costs, renewal price, and the route from the VPS region to the chosen YouTube ingest endpoint.
- Confirm the NGINX RTMP module is available for your OS and package. NGINX’s RTMP dynamic-module documentation advises checking operating-system compatibility and describes installing the NGINX Plus RTMP package. That does not establish that a distribution’s default community NGINX package includes the module. Verify the exact image, package, or build instructions for your VPS.
- Use YouTube’s current ingest details. Get the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS; its RTMPS ingestion guide specifies a valid YouTube endpoint and application path, the
rtmpsprotocol, and port 443. RTMPS is RTMP secured with TLS. - Protect the publish endpoint. Do not leave a public ingest endpoint open to unauthorized publishers. The module directives reference describes access controls such as allow and deny, but a complete hardened deployment depends on your configuration and is not established by that reference alone.
- Run a representative test. Test the planned resolution, motion, audio, and bitrate before relying on the setup, and monitor YouTube stream health. A brief static test may not reveal problems that appear under real content or sustained traffic.
What can go wrong, and what to check
- The stream starts but stops or degrades later: check transfer consumption, sustained network policy, fair-use limits, and whether the VPS is being throttled. A successful short test does not establish that the plan will sustain a month of traffic.
- NGINX rejects RTMP configuration or cannot load the module: confirm the selected OS, package, and module build are compatible. A generic NGINX install is not proof that RTMP support is included.
- YouTube does not accept the feed: recheck the Live Control Room URL and stream key, RTMPS scheme, endpoint, application path, and port 443. Verify encoder bitrate and keyframe settings against YouTube’s recommendations, then inspect stream health.
- The VPS struggles while processing video: distinguish forwarding from encoding or transcoding. If an external FFmpeg process is doing the latter, test that workload on the actual VPS rather than extrapolating from relay behavior.
- The stream is interrupted and recovery is uncertain: the module reference documents a
push_reconnecttimeout, with a three-second default on the cited page. Check the directive’s behavior and configuration for your build; do not treat that default as a guarantee of YouTube-side recovery or uninterrupted broadcasting.
What about a YouTube archive of the 24/7 stream?
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish how YouTube handles one uninterrupted 24-hour event, so do not rely on a single 24-hour broadcast producing one archive. Confirm the current behavior in YouTube Live Control Room if the recording matters.
