The key is the bitrate your encoder sends to YouTube. YouTube’s current recommended live bitrate for 720p is 6 Mbps with AV1 or H.265, or 8 Mbps with H.264, at either 30 or 60 fps. A lower suitable outgoing bitrate can reduce continuous upload use; resolution alone cannot guarantee savings.
What determines a 24/7 stream’s bandwidth?
For an encoder-based broadcast, the video file is the content source, while the encoder turns that source into a continuous digital feed for YouTube. YouTube Help describes the encoder’s job this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” The file’s original bitrate is not automatically the live upload bitrate; the encoder’s output settings determine what is sent. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder · YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into playback formats for viewers. That means the broadcaster’s upload rate is distinct from the quality and download rate a viewer selects. A 720p source can be encoded into a 720p live feed, but it is the configured outgoing bitrate—not the source file’s resolution by itself—that governs the continuous upload. YouTube’s recommended 720p live settings
YouTube’s live encoder settings table, accessed in 2026, gives these recommendations. They apply to live ingest, not to uploading a finished video file.

| Live output | Codec | YouTube’s recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | H.264 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | H.264 | 8 Mbps |
YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codecs, and RTMP/RTMPS among its live protocols. These bitrates are recommendations, not a guarantee of identical picture quality across codecs or content. Test representative footage: fast motion, fine detail, and grain can behave differently from static scenes. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Do not confuse live bitrate with video-upload recommendations
YouTube separately recommends 5 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 720p video uploads and 7.5 Mbps for high-frame-rate 720p uploads. Those figures concern uploading a video file, not the bitrate of a live feed. They should not be used as substitutes for the live encoder recommendations above. Estimate the bandwidth for continuous streaming
At a stable bitrate, data use is proportional to bitrate multiplied by streaming time. As a rough estimate, a constant 1 Mbps is about 10.8 GB over 24 hours using decimal gigabytes, before audio, protocol overhead, bitrate variation, retries, or a backup feed. On that basis, a continuous 6 Mbps feed is roughly 64.8 GB per day, and an 8 Mbps feed roughly 86.4 GB per day, before those additional factors. These are arithmetic estimates, not YouTube measurements or guaranteed transfer totals.
To estimate your own stream, use the bitrate actually sent by the encoder and the hours streamed. Compare before and after at the same duration: the proportional reduction is the bitrate difference divided by the original bitrate. No universal savings percentage or monthly amount is established for switching 24/7 streams to 720p; the result depends on the actual outgoing bitrates and time streamed.

Check upload capacity and test before committing to 24/7
- Choose the live profile. Set the encoder’s output to 1280 × 720, select the intended frame rate and codec, and set a bitrate guided by YouTube’s live table and the detail in your footage.
- Measure outbound capacity. Check upload speed—not just download speed—under realistic conditions, ideally at the times the stream will run. YouTube advises leaving bandwidth headroom; its streaming tips identify about 20% as a useful margin. The connection must also carry audio, protocol overhead, and any other simultaneous uploads. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
- Run a representative test. Test privately or unlisted before going public, then inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicators and monitor audio and video quality. A short stable test does not prove a home connection will remain stable around the clock, so consider its performance across normal busy periods. YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips – Computer
- Use a stable connection. For computer streaming, YouTube recommends Ethernet where practical. Wireless interference or other household traffic can undermine a bitrate that looked safe in a speed test. YouTube Help: Filming tips – Live
Why 720p does not always mean less bandwidth
- The encoder may still send a high bitrate. A 720p source encoded at a higher bitrate can use more upload data than a lower-bitrate stream at another resolution.
- Codec matters. YouTube’s recommended rates differ between H.264 and AV1/H.265 at the same listed resolution and frame rates.
- Image content matters. A static documentary shot and a scene with rapid movement, fine texture, or visible grain may need different settings to look acceptable.
- Other traffic and interruptions matter. Audio, overhead, changing bitrate, retries, and backup feeds affect real transfer totals.
Compare actual encoder bitrates and stream stability, then judge picture and audio quality using footage like what you plan to loop. Do not assume every 720p configuration uses less data than every 1080p configuration.

A home encoder gives you control over the outgoing profile, but a 24/7 stream also depends on the computer and internet connection staying available. If you want uploaded recordings or a playlist to loop on YouTube without keeping your own machine on, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
