Calibre-Web is a web app for browsing, reading and downloading eBooks stored in an existing Calibre library. It gives that library a browser-based interface, plus options such as an OPDS feed for compatible reader apps and sending books to e-readers.
What Calibre-Web does
The Calibre-Web project describes it as “a web app providing a clean interface for browsing, reading, and downloading eBooks using a valid Calibre database.” In practical terms, it presents a library you already manage with Calibre; it is not described as an e-book store. The project’s overview and setup guidance are in the Calibre-Web project README.
Its listed library features include filtering by title, author, tag, series and language; creating custom shelves; editing metadata; and managing user permissions. The README documents these capabilities, but their availability can depend on the release and how an installation is configured.
Ways to read or get books from the library
Read in a web browser
The project documents browser reading for .txt, .epub, .pdf, .cbr, .cbt, .cbz and .djvu files. This is the stated format list; check the documentation for the release and configuration you use rather than assuming every installation handles every file identically.

Browse with a compatible reader app using OPDS
Calibre-Web provides an OPDS feed. OPDS is a way for compatible reading apps to browse a library and download books. The calibre manual’s content-server guidance explains this general workflow. App support varies: an app or device needs to support OPDS, so the feed does not make every reader compatible automatically.
Send books to an e-reader
The project also lists sending eBooks to e-readers and syncing Kobo devices with the Calibre library. These are documented project features, not a guarantee for every device or model. Check the current project documentation for device-specific requirements.

How Calibre-Web relates to Calibre
Calibre-Web uses an existing Calibre library database. During setup, the administrator points it to the folder containing that library. It is therefore a way to access and serve an existing collection, not a replacement description for Calibre’s library-management role.
The calibre conversion tool is optional support for conversion-related functions. The Calibre-Web setup information says it can be added for on-the-fly conversion used by certain e-reader sending or editing features. It is not a general prerequisite just to browse an existing library.

What to check before setting it up
- Locate the library folder: you will need to point Calibre-Web to the folder containing the Calibre library database.
- Choose how readers will access books: browser reading, downloads through an OPDS-compatible app, and e-reader sending are distinct workflows.
- Check format and device support: the documented browser-reading formats and device features should be verified against the release and configuration you plan to run.
- Consult current installation instructions: the project describes pip installation and references other installation examples, but methods and dependencies can change. Follow the current README for release-specific steps.
