Released via RCA Records, the song became the lead single and title track of the band’s sixth album, which arrived on 17 May 2024.
When did Cage the Elephant release “Neon Pill”?
Sony Music Canada announced the single on 22 January 2024, describing it as the band’s first new music since Social Cues (2019) and a return after a five-year hiatus. That duration is the label’s description of the gap, rather than an independently calculated measure. The announcement also identified the release as being via RCA Records.
The song later anchored the album Neon Pill, Cage the Elephant’s sixth studio record, released on 17 May 2024. Apple Music lists 12 songs and a 38-minute runtime; the Associated Press also describes it as a 12-track album. Its track list includes “Out Loud,” “Good Time” and “Metaverse” alongside the title track.
Is “Neon Pill” a single or an album?
It is both. “Neon Pill” was the 2024 single that introduced the band’s return, and it is also the title track of the album that followed. The two releases are distinct points in the chronology: the single was announced in January, while the full album came out in May.

What the band said about the album
In the album announcement, vocalist Matthew Shultz described a more self-defined creative approach: “To me, Neon Pill is the first record where we were consistently uninfluenced, and I mean that in a positive way.” The band also reunited with producer John Hill, who had worked on Social Cues, according to the Associated Press.
In an interview published by the Associated Press on 16 May 2024, Shultz discussed a medical crisis and said he had fully recovered. AP connected his account, along with loss and the pandemic, to the album’s long writing and recording process. Those are elements of Shultz’s personal context as reported in the interview, not a diagnosis or a complete explanation of the record.
