A home library does not need to meet a target book count or follow a formal classification system. Start with what you want the collection to do, then choose a simple way to find, arrange, and care for its books. A compact collection selected for a clear purpose can be more useful than shelves filled without one.

Decide what your library is for

Begin by naming the collection’s purpose. It might support everyday reading, family reference, research, a subject you follow, or a creative practice. It can serve several purposes, but being clear about them helps you decide what belongs and how to organize it.

The American Library Association (ALA) advises that collection planning should come before selection. Its guide also recognizes that a library can grow out of books and other materials you already own. There is no established universal minimum or ideal number of books for a home library.

“A library collection should fit the mission for which it is created. The number of books it holds does not determine its worth. A well-selected library of 25 books could very well be an excellent library for its purpose.”

IRONCK Bookshelf and Bookcases 70" Tall, 6 Tiers Display Storage Shelves
  • Sturdy Material: Made with FSC-Certified wood, each shelf holds up to 22 lbs to securely store your books.
  • Stable Construction: With strengthen screws and the tipover resistance device, the bookcase is more stable
  • Chic Rustic Design: A 6-tier bookcase standing at 23.82" W * 9.25" D * 70.87" H, with the clean lines, is ideal for almost any space in your home
  • Easy to Clean: The bookcase is made of P2 MDF Board which is water-prof. You could easily clean it with wet wipes
  • Clear Instruction: With clear instructions and labeled parts, you’ll set it up in no time to pore over the pages for hours on end

The ALA guide attributes this statement to Erma Jean Loveland but does not identify her role. The 25-book example illustrates the point; it is not a recommended target.

Choose books with a consistent purpose in mind

Use your stated purpose as a practical filter when adding books. Ask whether a book will be read, consulted, shared, or kept because it matters to you. You do not need to justify every item by the same standard: a frequently used reference book and a family keepsake can both have a place for different reasons.

Before buying or accepting a book, consider whether you have a way to store it and, if the collection is shared or large, to record where it is. That small check can prevent a useful collection from becoming difficult to navigate.

Make books easy to find

Pick an arrangement you can maintain and search. The ALA’s home-library guide points readers toward cataloging programs intended for small and home libraries, but it does not rank current products or identify one best system. A spreadsheet or consistent shelf arrangement may be enough for a small collection; a larger or shared one may benefit from cataloging software.

Start with a lightweight catalog

A practical record can include the title, author, edition or ISBN when available, a subject or personal tag, and the book’s room or shelf location. Add reading status only if it helps you. These are useful fields to consider, not a formal standard. For books without an ISBN or other standard identifier, a title, author, and location can still make a record useful.

Compare systems by how well they work for you

  • Findability: Can you locate a book by title, author, subject, or another detail you remember?
  • Maintainability: Is it easy to update when books move or the collection grows?
  • Flexibility: Can it include older books and items without standard identifiers?
  • Location: Does the catalog record the room or shelf where each item lives?

A home collection does not have to use an institutional classification scheme. The useful test is whether your arrangement helps you retrieve books and is realistic to keep up.

Arrange and place books for access and support

For most books, the Library of Congress says shelf storage is acceptable when books are supported and do not lean or slump. Keep similar-sized books together when that makes the shelves more stable or easier to use. Bookends can help keep upright books supported.

  • Store books upright when they can stand that way without leaning.
  • Lay oversized volumes flat when they cannot stand upright, supporting the whole book.
  • Do not shelve a book with its spine facing upward.

Choose where shelves go with preservation in mind. The National Archives advises keeping books away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Avoid placing shelves near radiators or vents, and be cautious about rooms with large temperature or humidity swings.

Protect books from environmental damage

For most books, the Library of Congress describes a cool environment of 70°F or below and relative humidity of 30–55% as safe storage guidance. These figures are not a guarantee for every material or climate. The same guidance warns against extreme temperature and humidity changes and locations near vents or radiators.

The National Archives also recommends avoiding heat, moisture, and sunlight for books intended for preservation. Basements, attics, and garages may be poor long-term storage choices because conditions can be difficult to control and leaks or flooding are more likely. The Library of Congress cautions that plastic bins do not fix those underlying problems and can increase mold risk in humid areas.

For books that need long-term storage, the Library of Congress recommends acid- and lignin-free boxes, careful packing, and boxes that are not so large they become too heavy to handle. A box cannot compensate for a damp or overheated location.

Handle books gently and avoid risky repairs

Clean hands and gentle handling help reduce wear. The National Archives recommends using a paper or ribbon bookmark rather than folding page corners and keeping food and drink away from books. When copying or photographing a fragile volume, support it with a book cradle; do not press it face down on a copier or scanner.

Do not use self-stick tape on a damaged book, even if the tape is marketed as archival. The Library of Congress advises against it, and the National Archives warns that tape repairs can cause further damage, particularly to unique or heirloom books. Box a damaged book and handle it carefully rather than attempting a makeshift repair. For a valuable item, complicated damage, or damage that is progressing, consult a book conservator.

Review the collection without treating it like an institution

Collections change as interests and needs change. ALA guidance for institutional collections identifies publication date, use, and physical condition as review criteria, while noting that classics and locally significant works may remain valuable despite low use. At home, treat these as prompts rather than rules:

  • Is the information still useful for the purpose you keep the book?
  • Is it in usable condition, or does it need protection or professional care?
  • Does it still matter to you, your household, or the subject the collection serves?

A book need not be frequently used to earn its place. Equally, a book can be useful to someone else even if it no longer serves your collection. Let your purpose and available space guide those decisions.

Keep the system useful as the library grows

When you add books, record them and put them in their intended locations at the same time. If you move shelves or change the arrangement, update the location information too. Periodically check that your catalog still matches the shelves and that the system remains easy to use. Adjust the level of detail to the collection: the goal is a library you can navigate and care for, not a cataloging project that becomes harder to maintain than the books themselves.
