Build the recognizable Byers-house effect with an alphabet arranged beside individual Christmas bulbs. For a quick decoration, use paper letters, removable hooks and an ordinary light string. If you want letters to illuminate one at a time on command, use addressable LEDs with a compatible controller; that is a separate electronics project, not a simple plug-in upgrade.
What makes the wall recognizable
In Stranger Things, Joyce Byers covers her living room with Christmas lights so a message can be conveyed through an alphabet on the wall. Netflix’s production account describes set decorator Jess Royal arranging the lights and working with electricians on a master control panel that could switch individual bulbs and overhead lights. A home display can reproduce the visual language without duplicating the television set’s wiring or control system.
The essential design is simple: a clearly readable alphabet, with one visible bulb assigned to each letter. Pete Brown’s Windows Developer Blog conference demonstration used a compact display approximately 4 by 4 feet. That is one maker’s example, not a required minimum size.
Choose your build path first
| Path | What it does | Best for | Technical level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Decorative light string | Creates the alphabet-and-lights appearance; bulbs are not individually controlled. | Fast décor, parties and temporary displays | Beginner; no code |
| Programmable addressable LEDs | Lights selected letters in response to programmed messages. | Interactive effects and maker projects | Advanced; wiring, power and code |
| Wall-mounted layout | Uses the room’s wall as the backdrop. | A semi-permanent installation | Depends on the mounting method and surface |
| Portable panel | Builds the display on canvas, fabric or another board that can be moved. | Renters, storage and repeat events | Beginner to intermediate |
Option 1: make the decorative wall
Materials
- A Christmas light string. C7 bulbs are a plausible choice for the classic oversized look; C9 multi-color strings are another example used in published DIY instructions. These are historical examples, not statements about current stock.
- Paper letters or pre-made alphabet letters.
- Clear mini hooks and, where appropriate for the surface, poster putty.
- For a sturdier panel: canvas, fabric, black paint and thread.
Check the directions for every hook or adhesive and test it on your particular wall or finish. No mounting product should be assumed to remove without marks.

Wall-mounted method
- Plan the alphabet in straight, readable rows. Leave enough space beside each character for its assigned bulb.
- Place the letters using clear mini hooks, poster putty or another method suitable for the wall. A temporary arrangement can use individual sheets of printed letters.
- Lay out the light string around the rows, keeping the bulb-to-letter relationship unambiguous. Do not let extra bulbs create a second, confusing alphabet.
- Secure the cable lightly at intervals with the approved mounting hardware. Keep the plug, controller (if the string has one) and any connections accessible.
- Turn the string on and check the display from the viewing distance. Reposition letters or bulbs that are hidden by glare, furniture or cable slack.
Portable-panel method
- Cover a canvas or rigid panel with fabric, then paint or apply the alphabet in black so it contrasts with the lights.
- Mark the intended bulb positions beside the letters before attaching anything.
- Use thread to sew or tie each light in place, as described in one published canvas approach, rather than relying on tape near a hot or moving bulb.
- Test the panel while it is standing securely. Provide strain relief for the cord so lifting the panel does not pull on the light string.
A panel is easier to store and rearrange, but it still needs a safe place for the powered cord and a stable support. The 4-by-4-foot demonstration is a useful scale reference if you want a compact panel, not a rule for every room.
Option 2: make individual letters light up
An ordinary light string generally switches the whole string together. To illuminate one letter at a time, choose addressable LEDs and a controller that are designed to work together. Published examples include a 50-pixel WS2811 string with an Arduino, wire and a 12V 2A power supply, and a different build using an Adafruit Metro board, Arduino IDE and 120 NeoPixel LEDs—three LEDs per alphabet letter. Those configurations date from 2016–2017 and are examples, not universal compatibility specifications.

- Perfect for both renters and homeowners
Parts to select
- An addressable LED string or strip whose protocol and voltage are documented.
- A compatible microcontroller, such as the controller specified by the LED manufacturer or current project documentation.
- A power supply with the correct voltage and sufficient current for the actual LED count and brightness.
- Wire, connectors and an enclosure or other means of protecting exposed electronics.
Build sequence
- Decide how many LEDs represent each letter and record their index order. The software must know which pixels belong to A, B, C and so on.
- Confirm the LED voltage, data direction, controller logic requirements and power capacity from the current component documentation.
- Assemble the low-voltage circuit with power disconnected. Keep polarity and data-in/data-out orientation correct.
- Install the controller’s programming environment and load a minimal test that lights one pixel at a time.
- Map each alphabet position in software, then add message handling: display a letter, pause long enough to see it, clear or reset, and continue.
- Enclose or strain-relieve connections before putting the assembly on the wall. Test at the intended brightness and for the full planned message.
Do not treat cutting or rewiring mains-voltage Christmas lights as a beginner step. The interactive route is substantially more technical than hanging a decorative string; use current instructions for the exact LEDs, controller and supply you buy.
Arrange the alphabet so messages can be read
Use a consistent grid
Rows are easier to scan than a decorative arc. Keep letter spacing uniform and put each bulb in a predictable position—above, below or beside its letter—but use the same relationship throughout. If the bulbs are multicolor, color is decoration; the letter position remains the code.

Leave room for the message area
A wall that only flashes letters can feel abrupt. Leave clear space around the alphabet for viewers to stand back, and avoid placing the lowest row where furniture or children can snag the cable.
Decide how the display resets
For a non-programmable string, a “message” is a person pointing to or calling out letters. For a programmed version, choose whether the selected letter stays lit, advances automatically or clears after each character. A deliberate pause and reset make the effect understandable to guests.

- Inspect cords, plugs and insulation before installation; do not use damaged lighting.
- Keep connections and power supplies away from water, heat sources and places where they can be crushed.
- Do not overload a power supply or assume a 12V example works with another voltage or LED type.
- Route cables so doors, walkways and climbing points stay clear.
- For rentals or delicate finishes, test the mounting method first and remove it according to its instructions.
Which version should you build?
Choose the decorative string if the goal is the recognizable set dressing, a quick party backdrop or a display that needs no programming. Choose addressable LEDs only when selecting letters by code is central to the experience and you are prepared to verify electrical compatibility, write or adapt software and troubleshoot wiring. A portable panel is the practical compromise when the display must be stored or moved; direct wall mounting suits a longer-running installation on a surface you are allowed to alter.
