Bucky Barnes’ MCU story runs from Steve Rogers’ closest friend in World War II to a HYDRA-conditioned assassin, then to a survivor rebuilding his life and choosing what comes next. Follow his appearances in this order: Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, the post-credit scene in Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and Thunderbolts*. This is Bucky’s appearance sequence, not a complete chronological order for the entire MCU.
What is the right order to follow Bucky Barnes’ MCU story?
For a Bucky-focused watch, follow his on-screen story in release and appearance order:
- Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier
- Captain America: Civil War
- Black Panther post-credit scene
- Avengers: Infinity War
- Avengers: Endgame
- The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
- Thunderbolts* (2025)
This sequence keeps Bucky’s own character arc together. It is not a full-MCU chronological watch order: his scenes take place within stories centered on other heroes, and the larger franchise has its own timeline. Marvel’s 2023 announcement for its official timeline book says it follows MCU events from before the Big Bang through the Blip and beyond, and describes Disney+ timeline ordering; it does not establish a precise placement for every Bucky scene. How Bucky’s story unfolds
Captain America: The First Avenger: Steve’s friend and fellow soldier
James “Bucky” Barnes is Steve Rogers’ friend from Brooklyn. While Steve is repeatedly rejected by the Army, Bucky is set to join the 107th Infantry. Once Steve becomes Captain America, he refuses to accept that Bucky’s unit has been lost to HYDRA. Steve’s rescue mission brings the friends back together, and Bucky fights alongside Steve and the Howling Commandos.

During an assault on Arnim Zola’s train, Bucky falls from it. The film presents his death as apparent and final, but later reveals that he survived, was captured, and was transformed into HYDRA’s Winter Soldier. The fall is the turning point between the friends’ wartime story and the decades of control that follow. D23’s Bucky Barnes retrospective
Captain America: The Winter Soldier: the assassin behind the mask
Decades later, Steve faces a masked assassin known as the Winter Soldier. The reveal is that the assassin is Bucky, captured and brainwashed into serving HYDRA. He is not simply a villain who chose a new identity: his memories and actions are entangled with conditioning imposed on him.
During the Project Insight crisis, Steve tells him, “You’re my friend.” Bucky answers, “You’re my mission.” Steve refuses to fight him, saying, “I’m with you to the end of the line.” Bucky ultimately pulls Steve from the Potomac River, then visits the Smithsonian exhibit about his own past. The encounter does not instantly undo his conditioning, but it shows that some connection to Steve remains beneath it. D23’s retrospective
Captain America: Civil War: the past becomes a present conflict
HYDRA’s trigger words reactivate Bucky after he has been kept in cryogenic suspension. He is blamed for the Vienna bombing and hunted by authorities and T’Challa. Steve and Sam Wilson help him escape because they believe someone is manipulating events.

Steve and Tony Stark later discover that, while under HYDRA’s control, Bucky killed Tony’s parents. The revelation fractures the allies’ relationship. Bucky remembers his victims, but the story also makes clear that he lacked free control of his actions when HYDRA used him. Recognizing his responsibility to protect others, he chooses to return to cryogenic suspension in Wakanda until his trigger conditioning can be addressed. “I can’t trust my own mind,” he tells Steve. T’Challa sees Bucky as another victim of violence, much as he regards his own father. D23’s retrospective
Black Panther: a chance to recover in Wakanda
The post-credit scene shows Bucky awake in Wakanda after Shuri has deprogrammed him. The children call him the White Wolf, and Shuri says he still has more to learn. It marks a shift from suspended patient to someone able to begin recovery—not proof that the harm and consequences of his past have vanished.
Avengers: Infinity War: back in the fight, then lost in the Snap
When the Avengers’ allies gather in Wakanda, T’Challa provides Bucky with a new arm. Bucky joins the defense against Thanos’ forces and is among those erased when Thanos completes the Snap. He does not remain awake through the five-year gap: he returns after the Blip in Avengers: Endgame. D23’s retrospective
Avengers: Endgame: supporting Sam’s next step
Bucky returns with the restored heroes for the final battle against Thanos. At the end, Steve gives his shield to Sam. Bucky’s approving nod shows that he supports Sam taking up the symbolic role, closing Steve and Bucky’s long friendship while pointing toward their next chapter together.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier: a partnership after Steve
This six-episode Marvel Studios series takes place in the post-Endgame world, where Sam and Bucky navigate life without Steve Rogers. Its place in Bucky’s story is the move from fighting beside Steve to working alongside Sam. D23’s 2021 description establishes the series’ format and broad premise, but does not specify an exact in-universe year. D23’s series overview
Thunderbolts*: a later MCU appearance
Bucky appears in the 2025 MCU film Thunderbolts*, extending his story beyond the post-Endgame series. A 2025 TIME feature confirms his inclusion, but that feature is not a detailed plot synopsis, so it does not establish a fuller account of his role or the film’s ending. TIME’s Thunderbolts* feature

Bucky’s transformation is not a simple switch from good to evil and back again. He begins as Steve’s trusted friend, loses control of his life to HYDRA, and later has to face the consequences of violence committed while conditioned. His recovery involves accepting that his past matters without treating the Winter Soldier identity as a freely chosen self. Wakanda gives him a route toward regaining agency; his later choices, including seeking suspension when he fears his own mind, show him trying to keep others safe as well as himself.
That distinction is central to why Steve will not treat him as a disposable enemy. Their friendship matters, but the story does not suggest friendship alone can erase trauma, accountability, or the need for treatment.
