Bruno Mars was filmed lighting a cigarette as Anderson .Paak accepted Record of the Year with Silk Sonic at the 2022 Grammy Awards. A contemporary report highlighted several social-media posts about the moment, but those examples do not establish widespread outrage or measure how many people reacted.
What happened on the Grammy stage?
Silk Sonic—Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak—won Record of the Year for “Leave the Door Open” at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards. As .Paak accepted the award, Mars was filmed lighting a cigarette, according to The Independent’s April 4, 2022 report.
.Paak described the four-award result during the speech: “In the industry, we call that a clean sweep.” The Recording Academy’s retrospective on Silk Sonic’s wins says the duo won all four awards for which it was nominated.
How did people react?
The Independent quoted individual social-media posts that joked about or criticized the cigarette moment. One post asked, “Can I bum a smoke?” Another asked, “Can we talk about that instead of Will Smith now?” These examples show that some users commented on the incident; they are not a poll, a count of reactions, or evidence that the comments represented viewers broadly.

Was smoking against Grammy or venue rules?
The available sources do not establish whether smoking onstage violated event, venue, or broadcast rules. The Recording Academy’s rules and guidelines page describes award eligibility and voting, not a smoking policy applicable to this moment. Neither the official 2022 Grammy moments recap nor the contemporary news report establishes that a rule was broken.
