Bruce Wayne Was Named After Two Real Historical Figures

Bill Finger reportedly named Bruce Wayne after Robert the Bruce and Anthony “Mad Anthony” Wayne. Here’s what the account says—and how it differs from Batman’s fictional origin.

It was Bruce Wayne—not “Batman”—whose name Bill Finger reportedly drew from two historical figures: “Bruce” from Robert the Bruce and “Wayne” from American commander Anthony “Mad Anthony” Wayne. The account is attributed to Finger through a secondary reference that cites a 1994 biography; it is not a claim that either figure inspired Batman’s superhero name.

Who inspired the name Bruce Wayne?

Bill Finger is credited with the naming explanation. A Batman publication-history reference quotes him saying: “Bruce Wayne’s first name came from Robert the Bruce, the Scottish patriot. Wayne, being a playboy, was a man of gentry. I searched for a name that would suggest colonialism. I tried Adams, Hancock …then I thought of Mad Anthony Wayne.”

That reference attributes the quotation to Joe Desris’s biography in The Batman Archives, Volume 3 (DC Comics, 1994), page 223. The quotation is therefore best presented as Finger’s account as reported by that source, rather than as wording independently verified against the archival volume.

“Bruce”: Robert the Bruce

Finger identified Robert the Bruce as the source of Bruce Wayne’s first name, calling him “the Scottish patriot.” The cited account supports that naming connection; it does not establish further biographical details about Robert the Bruce.

“Wayne”: Anthony “Mad Anthony” Wayne

Finger said he chose Wayne with “Mad Anthony Wayne” in mind. Anthony Wayne (1745–1796) was a U.S. military commander who served in the American Revolution and later led the U.S. Army. The U.S. Army Center of Military History records his appointment as colonel of the 4th Pennsylvania Battalion in January 1776 and his promotion to brigadier general in the Continental Army in February 1777. Its account describes him as an aggressive commander with a fiery temper; that context helps explain the nickname, but does not by itself establish a precise origin for it.

How the name story fits Batman’s creation

DC’s retrospective says editor Vin Sullivan asked Bob Kane to design a new hero in 1939, and Kane and writer Bill Finger conceived Batman. The first Batman story, “The Case of the Chemical Syndicate,” appeared in Detective Comics #27. DC lists its newsstand date as March 30, 1939, and its cover date as May 1939; Finger wrote the story and Kane drew it.

Batman’s fictional origin came later, in Detective Comics #33 in November 1939. That story established the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents as the reason for his crime-fighting mission. It is a separate part of the character’s history: Robert the Bruce and Anthony Wayne are reported sources for Bruce Wayne’s name, while the tragedy is the fictional motivation for Batman.

Finger’s role is significant beyond the naming anecdote. DC credits Kane and Finger with conceiving Batman, and a peer-reviewed art-history essay examines Finger’s contributions to the character’s costume and mythology and argues that he should be regarded as Batman’s co-creator.
