Shields’ older daughter, Rowan, already knew. Grier said the disclosure hit her deeply and personally, and she could not finish the film.

It was Grier. In an interview published by PEOPLE and republished by Yahoo on August 30, 2024, Grier said she was learning about her mother’s account at the same time as the public. Rowan had known about it beforehand.
Shields said she had described the documentary to Grier as a film about the sexualization of women in her industry, but had not prepared her for the assault disclosure. “I didn’t prepare her,” Shields said, calling the situation “a miscommunication.”
How did Grier react to the disclosure?
Grier said, “I was learning about things the same time that the world was and I just took it more deeply and personally.” She also said, “I couldn’t even get through it.” Her reaction was to watching the documentary and learning this part of her mother’s story; it does not independently corroborate Shields’ account of the assault.

What did Shields describe in Pretty Baby?
In the film, Shields said she was attacked in her early 20s after a work dinner. She described going to an unnamed Hollywood professional’s hotel room believing he would call her a cab, and said she froze during the assault. ABC News’ January 23, 2023 report and the Associated Press report from January 20, 2023 describe the account. Shields did not name the man in those reports, and his identity should not be inferred.

Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields is a two-part documentary directed by Lana Wilson. ABC News reported that it premiered on Hulu on April 3, 2023. The film looks at Shields’ life and career, including the sexualization and scrutiny she faced as a child actor and model, as well as her personal history; the assault disclosure is one part of that broader story. ABC’s launch announcement describes its format and premiere. That launch information does not establish current availability in every country or territory.
The documentary also includes a family-dinner scene in which Shields’ daughters discuss her childhood movies, as Vogue’s March 30, 2023 coverage describes. That scene is separate from the later interview explaining when Grier learned about her mother’s assault disclosure.
