How Brook became a living skeleton
Brook had eaten the Yomi Yomi no Mi before he died as a member of the Rumbar Pirates. The fruit let his soul return after death, but it took so long to find his body that it had decomposed. He came back as a skeleton and spent 50 years alone at sea.
His solitude was compounded when Gecko Moria took his shadow. Without it, Brook could not safely enter sunlight. The Straw Hats helped him recover it, and he accepted Luffy’s invitation to join the crew.

He has not yet been reunited with the whale in the official profile’s account; the reunion remains the destination Brook looks forward to.
