In Bring Her Back, Laura is trying to bring her dead daughter Cathy back through a ritual that uses Oliver—actually a kidnapped boy named Connor—as an intermediary, then targets Piper as the final host. The film shows the danger and intended mechanics of Laura’s plan; it does not confirm that Cathy is successfully restored.
What is Laura trying to do?
Laura’s goal is to resurrect Cathy, her dead daughter. She takes in foster siblings Andy and Piper, but her apparent care for them conceals a plan that treats the children as instruments in an attempt to undo Cathy’s death. TIME’s May 30, 2025 ending explanation describes Laura’s ritual and its intended transfer.

Oliver is Connor, the ritual’s host
The boy the film presents as Oliver is actually Connor, a child Laura kidnapped. He is not her nephew: Laura uses him as the first host for Cathy, an intermediary in the ritual rather than the person she ultimately intends to receive Cathy.
Piper is the intended final recipient
Laura’s plan requires Cathy to be transferred into Piper. That makes the siblings’ foster placement part of the trap. Piper is mostly blind, and Andy is protective of her; their dependence on adults helps make the home, which should offer safety, a place where Laura can exert control. The official Sony Pictures UK synopsis identifies Andy and Piper as siblings placed with a new foster mother.

Why is the pool important?
The pool is part of the ritual, not merely a setting for a threat. Laura intends to drown Piper, echoing the manner in which Cathy died, before Oliver—Connor—transfers Cathy into her. The horror lies in Laura making another child’s death a condition of her effort to reverse her own loss.
Does Laura succeed in bringing Cathy back?
The ending explanation establishes what Laura is trying to do, not that the attempt succeeds. The last act places Piper in immediate danger and makes the intended transfer legible, but it does not provide authoritative confirmation that Cathy has been restored. It is more accurate to describe the ritual as Laura’s plan than to call the resurrection a completed fact.

What does the ending mean?
One grounded reading is that the supernatural ritual gives physical form to Laura’s refusal to accept loss. TIME frames the film as a story in which grief becomes monstrous; Laura remains the human agent who turns that grief into harm. This is an interpretation of the film, not the only possible meaning.
The siblings’ vulnerability deepens that reading. Their foster placement puts them in the care of an adult who appears to offer protection, while Laura’s real purpose is to use them. The gap between care and control is central to the ending’s cruelty.
