Yes—Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is worth reopening the diary for if you want Renée Zellweger’s familiar warmth in a romantic comedy that gives grief and starting over real weight. Jocelyn Noveck of the Associated Press calls it the best Bridget Jones film since the 2001 original, while recognizing that this chapter’s appeal comes from Bridget’s emotional life as much as its romantic awkwardness.
What makes this chapter different?
Directed by Michael Morris, the 2025 film finds Bridget as a widowed single mother balancing work, parenting and the possibility of romance. Universal’s synopsis describes her trying to forge a new path toward life and love as she encounters a younger man and her son’s science teacher.
The change is not that Bridget has stopped being Bridget. In Noveck’s reading, Zellweger retains her optimism and goofiness while playing a woman shaped by her experiences in her 50s. The story’s added emotional center is Bridget’s loss and her gradual willingness to live fully again.
The Atlantic’s March 2025 essay argues that the film gives Mark’s death more weight than Helen Fielding’s source novel does, where the death serves more as a springboard for Bridget’s dating story. That is the essay’s interpretation, but it helps explain why the film can feel more reflective than a straightforward return to the series’ familiar romantic-comedy setup.

Does it still work as a Bridget Jones romantic comedy?
Yes. Romantic possibilities, anticipation and awkwardness remain part of the story, with a younger man and Bridget’s son’s science teacher among the potential interests. The difference is that these possibilities sit alongside grief and parenting rather than replacing them.
Noveck also points to a change in Bridget’s relationship with herself: the earlier films’ focus on smoking and weight obsession has been left behind. The result, as she sees it, is a character who remains recognizably comic without being defined by the same old insecurities.

How good is it compared with the earlier films?
Noveck awards the film three stars out of four and calls it “the best since the 2001 original.” She writes that what makes it especially enjoyable is “that she still makes us care so darned much.” That is one critic’s judgment, not a consensus or an audience rating, but it captures the film’s strongest case: Bridget’s return matters because her vulnerability still connects.
For viewers chiefly looking for a light, uncomplicated romance, the emphasis on widowhood and grief may make this a more reflective installment than expected. For viewers open to a comedy that lets its central character change while retaining her familiar warmth, that shift is the point.
