Spoilers for the first four episodes of Bridgerton season 4. Part 1 follows Benedict Bridgerton’s search for the mysterious Lady in Silver—and his growing connection with Sophie Baek, the maid whose identity he does not recognize. Its cliffhanger is not a proposal of marriage: Benedict asks Sophie to become his mistress, and she runs. Part 1 premiered on January 29, 2026; part 2 was released on February 26, 2026.
What happens in Bridgerton season 4 part 1?
The season adapts Julia Quinn’s third Bridgerton novel, An Offer from a Gentleman. At Violet Bridgerton’s masquerade, Benedict (Luke Thompson) is captivated by a masked woman he calls the Lady in Silver. She is Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha), a maid whose life and social position are far removed from the world Benedict associates with the woman he met at the ball. Netflix’s season announcement identifies the novel as the season’s source material.
The masquerade encounter gives the romance its central complication: Benedict idealizes the masked stranger, while Sophie must navigate the real class boundaries that govern her life. He is drawn to her before he understands who she is; their attraction grows as their very different positions make a conventional future uncertain.
Bridgerton season 4 part 1 ending explained
After Benedict and Sophie give in to their attraction, he asks her to be his mistress. They are not engaged, and the scene does not resolve their relationship. Benedict is offering the kind of arrangement he believes can keep Sophie close within the social rules he knows. Sophie rejects the proposal by fleeing.

That response is rooted in her family history. Netflix’s ending explanation says Sophie’s father was a lord and her mother a maid who became his mistress. After their deaths, Sophie lacked status and security and came under the control of her punishing stepmother, Araminta. Becoming a mistress would echo the precarious position Sophie has already seen harm her family.
Showrunner Jess Brownell put Sophie’s objection plainly: “For Sophie, the idea of being a mistress is the worst possible thing she could be asked.” Brownell also said Sophie “really doesn’t want to ever put a child in the situation she was in.” Sophie hopes Benedict might see beyond the ton’s rules and the class barrier between them. Her flight makes the consequences of his offer clear, but it does not establish whether she will accept or reject him permanently.

Why are Kate and Anthony absent from part 1?
Netflix’s season 4 cast guide lists Simone Ashley as Kate Bridgerton and Jonathan Bailey as Anthony Bridgerton. That cast listing does not establish that either appears in the first four episodes, and it does not give a specific explanation for their absence from part 1. The available official information therefore does not support a production explanation or a particular in-story reason.
