What happens at the start of “Tick Tock”
Penelope returns to her other identity
The episode opens with Penelope writing a new missive as Lady Whistledown. The scene then flashes back to the events after the Part 1 finale, when Colin asked Penelope to marry him following their carriage ride. The opening immediately places her two lives side by side: she has the relationship she wanted, while continuing to keep from Colin the identity that gives her independence and influence.
The engagement reaches the Bridgerton family
Penelope and Colin enter the Bridgerton family drawing room to announce their impending wedding. Violet, Francesca and Hyacinth are delighted. Eloise is not: she knows Penelope is Lady Whistledown and is upset that Colin has not been told.

That disagreement gives the engagement its central tension. Penelope and Colin can celebrate their future together, but Eloise’s knowledge makes clear that the secret may reach him—and that the way he learns it matters.
Why Colin’s proposal is difficult for Penelope to believe
Nicola Coughlan told Netflix Tudum that Penelope “really cannot fathom [his feelings for her]. It actually doesn’t compute to her what he’s saying at all,” adding that she thinks, “This can’t be happening. This isn’t real.” Her reaction frames the proposal not as a simple resolution but as a moment Penelope struggles to accept as genuine.

Showrunner Jess Brownell described the couple’s Part 2 dynamic as being put “into a love bubble,” adding that it “adds to the feeling of coziness and intimacy this season.” Brownell’s remarks concern Part 2 as a whole, rather than Episode 5 alone.
