The death of Cole Nikolas “Niko” McKnight, the son of R&B singer Brian McKnight and Julie McKnight, was confirmed by close family members. Niko died on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at age 32, after an approximately two-year battle with cancer.
Family confirms Niko McKnight’s death
Niko’s uncle, gospel singer Claude McKnight, publicly announced the death in a TikTok video. Claude described his nephew as “quirky,” “curious” and “ridiculously talented,” and said Niko was gifted as a singer, guitarist and photographer.
A statement from Julie McKnight’s family identified Niko by his full name, Cole Nikolas McKnight, and described him as a cherished husband, son, brother, grandson, uncle and nephew. The statement also remembered him as a self-taught artist whose interests included music and photography.

Reports describing the family announcement said Niko had been battling cancer for about two years. Some secondary accounts have identified the illness as colon cancer, but the family statement cited in the strongest contemporaneous coverage confirmed cancer without publicly establishing a specific subtype. It is therefore more accurate to describe Niko’s illness simply as cancer unless a direct family or medical source provides further detail.
What Niko had said about his illness and his father
Niko had spoken publicly about his diagnosis before his death. In January 2024, he discussed having cancer on social media. He later wrote on X about a hospitalization involving complications from the illness and said that he wanted to reconcile with his father.
In that account, as reported by entertainment media, Niko said he wanted to hear Brian McKnight tell him that he loved him. That was Niko’s personal description of his experience and wishes; it does not independently establish what contact occurred between the two men afterward.
Niko also responded publicly in April 2024 after Brian McKnight made harsh comments about his older biological children. Niko acknowledged that there had been serious family problems, but said the treatment of his siblings was unjustified.

The public rift between Brian McKnight and his older children
The family conflict had become public well before Niko’s death. In 2024, reports quoted Brian McKnight referring to his older children with phrases including “products of sin” and “pure evil.” The remarks prompted public criticism and responses from Niko and other members of the family.
Because the family members have offered sharply different accounts, the history should not be reduced to a single uncontested narrative. Public reporting supports the description of a serious and highly visible family estrangement, but it does not establish every detail of the relationship or prove what happened in private conversations.
Competing accounts about medical care and contact
Brian McKnight later said that he and his wife, Leilani Mendoza, had tried to arrange specialist cancer care and private treatment for Niko. According to Brian’s account, Niko and Julie McKnight declined or blocked those efforts.
Julie disputed that version, describing it in comments reported by Complex as a false narrative. The competing statements mean that claims Brian abandoned Niko, refused to help him medically or had no contact with him cannot responsibly be presented as established facts.

Brian also responded after Claude McKnight announced Niko’s death publicly. He criticized his uncle’s announcement as “tasteless,” said he had been holding a private memorial in Maui and claimed that communication with Niko had remained open until Niko’s death. Those statements came from Brian’s own social-media response and remain part of the disputed public record.

Brian McKnight’s legal actions after the dispute
The conflict continued into 2026. By April 2026, Brian McKnight had filed defamation litigation against several people and media entities over what he characterized as a false account of his parenting and his relationship with Niko. Reporting identified claims involving Julie McKnight, Brian McKnight Jr., Marc Lamont Hill, Tasha K, the New York Post and other media-related defendants.
A separate federal case in the Eastern District of North Carolina listed Brian McKnight as the plaintiff and FOXY, WFXC, K 107.1/104.3, Urban One and Karen Clark as defendants. The public docket showed motions to dismiss and a mediation-related entry as of April 20, 2026.
The existence of those lawsuits means that allegations were filed in court; it does not mean that Brian’s account has been proven or that the competing family accounts have been legally resolved. The litigation should therefore be described using terms such as “alleged,” “claimed,” “according to the complaint” and “disputed.”
Remembering Niko apart from the family conflict
The public story surrounding Niko’s death has been dominated by the estrangement between him and his father. But the family statements also portrayed Niko as a creative person with a life and identity beyond that dispute: a musician, guitarist, photographer and self-taught artist who was loved in several family roles.
The confirmed facts are limited but clear. Niko McKnight died at 32 on May 29, 2025, following a lengthy cancer battle. His relatives publicly mourned him, while the details of his relationship with Brian McKnight—and the claims about contact and medical assistance—remain contested.
