Brian James, the founding guitarist and early principal songwriter of the Damned, died on 6 March 2025, aged 74. He helped shape the band’s 1977 debut, Damned Damned Damned, including the songs “New Rose” and “Neat Neat Neat.”
Who was Brian James?
James was born Brian Graham Robertson on 18 February 1951. He became a founding guitarist of the Damned and one of the band’s early principal songwriters. BMG describes him as the group’s primary songwriter and guitarist.
Some initial reports, including the supplied headline wording, said he was 70. The Guardian later amended its 7 March 2025 report on 24 April after confirming his birth date; its obituary gives his age at death as 74. The Guardian’s obituary records the corrected dates.
How did Brian James shape the Damned’s sound?
James’s guitar and songwriting were central to the Damned’s early work. Their debut album, Damned Damned Damned, came out in 1977. BMG associates him with “New Rose” and “Neat Neat Neat,” two of the record’s defining songs. BMG also describes “New Rose” as the first ever UK punk single; that characterization is the label’s, rather than an uncontested historical designation. BMG’s tribute to James outlines his role and credits.
