Brewster’s Millions: How I’d Spend $30 Million in 30 Days

To meet Brewster’s fictional challenge, I’d spend on a major event and other documented services completed within 30 days—without ending up with new assets.

I’d spend the money on services that are delivered before the 30 days are up: a major live event, advertising for it, hospitality, and the people needed to make it happen. I would avoid buying anything that might still count as an asset at the deadline. Here’s an illustrative $30 million plan based on the fictional rules in the 1985 film—not a legal interpretation of how a real will or trust would be applied.

What Brewster has to do in the film

In Walter Hill’s 1985 comedy, Montgomery Brewster must spend $30 million in 30 days to qualify for a much larger inheritance. Universal’s synopsis describes the premise; AFI’s catalog specifies the inheritance as $300 million and says Brewster can finish with only the clothes on his back. AFI also notes that he cannot reveal the terms to his friends. These are fictional plot figures, not estimates of present-day purchasing power. Universal Pictures At Home; AFI Catalog.

The film’s spending examples include a baseball exhibition, uniforms, hired help, meals, hotel services, advertising, and a party. A transcript of the film’s rules adds that up to 5% may go to charity and another 5% may be gambled, but that he cannot simply give money away, must receive value for hired services, and cannot destroy something inherently valuable. Because those percentages and restrictions come from a transcript of fictional dialogue, they are best treated as story rules; the film does not settle every possible edge case. Film transcript.

My illustrative $30 million spending plan

I’d make the centerpiece a large public sports-and-music benefit event and ensure every major payment bought a service delivered by day 30. The figures below are proposed allocations, not verified market prices. In practice, each contract and payment would need to be priced and documented independently.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use Allocation Why it fits the fictional rules
Live sports-and-music benefit event: venue, staging, sound, broadcast, staffing, security, insurance, transport, and temporary rentals $12.0 million It buys a completed event and temporary use of facilities and equipment rather than durable property. AFI’s plot includes a baseball exhibition and a large party.
Advertising and media placements for a public cultural or civic event $6.0 million The placements run before the deadline, echoing the film’s campaign-advertising plot point without making an election campaign central to the plan.
Hotel, catering, transport, and event hospitality consumed during the 30 days $4.0 million These are services used during the challenge, rather than goods retained afterward.
Event producers, performers, crews, accountants, and security $3.0 million Payment is for work actually delivered by the deadline, consistent with the film transcript’s value-for-services rule.
Travel and temporary venue or equipment rentals, fully used by day 30 $1.0 million Rental avoids keeping the item, provided the arrangement leaves no refund, future-use credit, or other valuable right.
Charity, up to the film’s stated allowance $1.5 million Five percent of the fictional $30 million budget, as stated in the screenplay transcript.
Gambling losses, up to the film’s stated allowance $1.5 million A separate five percent of the fictional budget under the transcript’s rules; this is only a story-rule allocation, not a recommendation to gamble.
Final scheduled services and contingency for legitimate event costs $1.0 million A buffer for documented services completed before the deadline, rather than an unexplained balance or a last-minute purchase of an asset.
Total $30.0 million Illustrative allocation only

How I’d keep the spending from leaving assets behind

The hard part is not adding the figures; it is making sure the spending does not leave Brewster with something valuable at the end. The film establishes a clothes-on-his-back condition, but its transcript does not define how every modern contract right, refund, or intangible would be treated. My plan would therefore prioritize completed services and temporary use, with close attention to what remains after the event.

  • Pay for delivery, not a promise of future service. Schedule events, advertising, travel, and contracted work to be completed by day 30.
  • Use market-priced contracts. Keep quotes, invoices, proof of delivery, and records that show what each payment bought. A payment to a friend without equivalent work could look like a disguised gift under the film’s stated rules.
  • Close out the arrangements. Avoid refundable deposits, transferable credits, prepaid future use, retained recording rights, or other valuable rights that survive the deadline. A trustee would need to accept the specific terms; the film does not answer how such cases would be judged.
  • Do not buy durable property. Vehicles, art, real estate, stocks, collectibles, and long-lived equipment are poor fits for a challenge that ends with no assets.
  • Reconcile the final account. An independent accounting monitor could verify that every payment cleared, the promised service was delivered, and no future obligation or refund remained at the deadline.

Why I’d choose an event over other spending routes

The event approach concentrates spending on services that can be scheduled, consumed, and documented within a month. It also resembles several activities in the film. Other routes may be possible under the fictional premise, but I would compare them on the points that determine whether the money was genuinely spent without leaving value behind:

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • What the payment buys: a completed service is a clearer fit than an object that remains in Brewster’s possession.
  • When delivery occurs: the service needs to be finished before the deadline, not merely ordered or prepaid.
  • How value is documented: independent pricing and records help distinguish real purchases from gifts disguised as fees.
  • What rights survive: a deposit, refund, credit, or future-use entitlement could retain value after the money has left the account.
  • Whether the spending fits the stated limits: charity and gambling are each capped at 5% in the film transcript, while gifts and destruction of valuable purchases are prohibited.

I’d leave the film’s election-advertising route out of a real-world version of the plan. A non-electoral public event is simpler, while campaign spending could raise legal and ethical issues beyond the fictional challenge.
