Mastodon anunció la muerte de Hinds el 21 de agosto de 2025. Associated Press informó que tenía 51 años y que el examen médico concluyó que murió por múltiples lesiones contundentes. Hinds cofundó Mastodon en 2000 junto con Troy Sanders, Bill Kelliher y Brann Dailor, y fue guitarrista y vocalista de la banda.
