What he did discuss was how he prepared for two very different roles: a restrictive diet and training regimen for George of the Jungle, and weight gain alongside extensive prosthetics for The Whale. The available interviews also do not verify that he categorically said he would never repeat the earlier diet.
What Fraser said about preparing for George of the Jungle
In a 2022 conversation with Variety’s Actors on Actors, reported by Entertainment Tonight, Fraser recalled an intense diet and training regimen for the 1997 film. He said: “I was waxed. Starved of carbohydrates. I would drive home after work and stop to get something to eat. I needed some cash one day, and I went to the ATM, and I couldn’t remember my PIN number because my brain was misfiring.”
That is a personal, retrospective anecdote—not a detailed diet plan, a medically assessed account, or advice for someone else to follow. Fraser did not provide a specific calorie target, schedule, or weight-loss figure in the reported remarks.
How The Whale transformation differed
Weight gain and prosthetics
Fraser said he put on weight for Charlie, his character in The Whale, but the reporting does not give a verified starting or ending body weight. In the same 2022 interview reported by Entertainment Tonight, he explained: “I put on weight to play this role, and it wasn’t enough — so the body had to go on top of that, and the two worked together.”

The “body” was the prosthetic costume. Vanity Fair reported director Darren Aronofsky’s description of Fraser carrying between 50 and 300 extra pounds depending on the scene. That figure refers to the prosthetic setup he carried while filming, not Fraser’s body weight and not weight he later lost. Good Morning America described the suit as 100 pounds; these are different reported descriptions, so they should not be combined into a single measurement.
Research and consultation
Fraser also said he researched the experiences of people living with obesity and spoke with members of the Obesity Action Coalition. The coalition told Good Morning America that it supplied volunteers to share their experiences. Fraser described wanting to avoid a one-note portrayal: “Up until now, I don’t think I’ve seen this character body depicted in films and cinema unless it was for some cheap one-note joke. And this is not that.”

What is known about weight loss after The Whale?
The cited reporting does not establish a specific post-film weight loss for Fraser: it gives no amount, timeline, or method. A changed appearance or the difference between roles is not enough to infer a personal weight-loss result. Nor does the available coverage substantiate the claim that Fraser said he would not diet as he did for George of the Jungle. The documented contrast is between the preparation he described for two roles—not a confirmed account of what he did after filming.

George of the Jungle involved a restrictive regimen Fraser later described in his own words. For The Whale, his account includes some weight gain, a substantial prosthetic costume, and research and conversations with people affected by obesity. Costume weight, an actor’s body weight, and a claimed later weight loss are separate things; the reporting supports the first two role-preparation accounts but not a quantified after-film result.

Fraser won the 2023 Academy Award for best actor for The Whale, as reported by the Associated Press. That is career context, not evidence about his body or health.
