No: a message claiming to be Brad Pitt is not proof that it is really him. After a French woman was reportedly deceived by people impersonating the actor and lost €830,000, Pitt’s spokesperson warned fans about scammers exploiting their connection to celebrities. Treat unsolicited messages asking for money as suspicious, and do not send money or gifts to an online romantic interest you have not met in person.
What happened in the reported Brad Pitt impersonation scam?
The Guardian reported in 2025 that a French woman identified as Anne lost €830,000 to people posing as Brad Pitt. Coverage rendered that sum as approximately US$850,000; the dollar figure is a conversion of the reported euro loss, not a separate amount. The report does not establish whether any money was recovered or the current status of her complaint or an investigation. The Guardian’s report.
A spokesperson for Pitt said: “It’s awful that scammers take advantage of the strong bond between fans and celebrities.” The spokesperson also urged people not to respond to unsolicited online outreach, particularly from actors who have no social media presence. That warning was attributed to Pitt’s spokesperson, not to Pitt personally. The Guardian’s report.
A separate Belgian Federal Police notice describes another fake-Brad-Pitt case: a victim was defrauded of €830,000 between February 2023 and June 2024. The matching amount does not show that the Belgian case and Anne’s reported case are connected. Belgian Federal Police notice.

How to assess a message claiming to be a celebrity
A celebrity’s name, photograph, video, or profile does not establish who is behind an account. A reverse-image search can help reveal whether a profile picture appears elsewhere or is associated with a different identity, but it cannot prove who sent a message. Check claims independently through known official channels rather than relying on links, contact details, or explanations supplied by the person who approached you.
- Pause before replying or paying. Be especially cautious if someone who contacted you unexpectedly turns the conversation toward money, gifts, emergencies, or secrecy.
- Verify independently. Look for confirmation through established, official channels. A familiar-looking account or image is not enough.
- Ask someone you trust. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends discussing the situation with a friend or family member and searching for the person’s story. FTC romance-scam guidance.
- Do not send money or gifts to an online love interest you have not met in person. This is the FTC’s central practical advice for avoiding romance scams. FTC romance-scam guidance.
If you have already sent money
- Contact the payment company immediately. Tell it the transfer was connected to a scam and ask whether it can be reversed or refunded. The possibilities depend on how you paid; recovery is not guaranteed. FTC guidance on what to do if you were scammed.
- Report the account to the platform where the person contacted you, and report the suspected scam to the FTC. FTC guidance on what to do if you were scammed.
- Be wary of anyone promising to recover the money for a fee. The FTC notes that cryptocurrency payments can be especially difficult to recover; no reporting can guarantee that funds will be returned. FTC guidance on what to do if you were scammed.
Romance scams are a broader problem
CBS News, citing the Associated Press in 2025, reported that more than 64,000 Americans reported over $1 billion in romance-scam losses in 2023. Those figures are secondary attribution in that coverage, not a current or independently checked FTC dataset here. CBS News / Associated Press report.

Public ridicule of someone targeted by a scam can obscure the more useful lesson: impersonators manipulate trust and emotion. The person using a celebrity’s identity is responsible for the deception. A reported loss is not, by itself, a court-established finding, and the available reporting does not establish the outcome of Anne’s complaint or whether she recovered money.
