The Record is boygenius’s 12-track debut full-length, released March 31, 2023. Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus made it as a band after first joining forces on their 2018 self-titled EP. Their label’s account frames the album around recapturing the everyday joy of making music with friends—not as a definitive explanation of every song, but as useful context for hearing how three distinct writers build a shared record.
What is The Record?
Boygenius is the collaboration of singer-songwriters Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus. The Record is their debut full-length album, following the trio’s six-song, self-titled EP from 2018. It was released March 31, 2023, through Interscope. In its release announcement, the group said it produced the album at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La Studios in Malibu, California. Pitchfork’s announcement reported those release details.

The album has 12 tracks, sequenced across two sides on the official album page. Its title suits a project that brings three established songwriting voices into one band setting: songs can put one member at the front, then make room for shared vocals, exchanged lines, and group arrangements.
How did the trio come together to make the album?
In a March 2023 feature, Universal Music Canada described the album’s collaborative process as restarting after Bridgers sent Baker and Dacus a demo of “Emily I’m Sorry” about a week after Punisher came out in 2020. Baker then set up a shared folder for song ideas. That account makes the record’s origin feel less like a single songwriter’s project and more like an ongoing conversation between three friends with distinct musical instincts. Universal Music Canada’s feature is the source for that chronology.
#1 Best Overall
The same feature describes the album as “about recapturing joy,” especially the small pleasure of making music with friends without requiring a grand reason. That is the band-supplied framing, rather than a rule for how listeners must interpret the lyrics. It also connects “Without You Without Them,” the opening track, to the earlier EP’s ending and hears an old-time family-harmony tradition in its sound.
The feature gives a glimpse of the personal continuity behind that collaboration, too. Dacus says, “I find comfort in knowing that I’m going to know you two a long time, and get to see the different iterations of the person you are.” The line appears in the context of the members’ long familiarity and the ways people change.

- “Not Strong Enough”
- “Revolution 0”

The first six tracks form the opening side in the official vinyl sequence; the remaining six make up the second. The spellings above follow the official album page. The official Bandcamp album page lists the track order and format details.
How do the songs show three distinct voices working as a band?
Apple Music’s editorial describes an approach in which many songs put one member in the lead, while fuller passages gain energy by trading verses and ideas. It characterizes “Cool About It” as subdued and acoustic, “Not Strong Enough” as breezy power-pop, and “Satanist” as the album’s heaviest song sonically. Those are the editorial’s listening descriptions, not official genre labels or claims about who wrote each song. Apple Music’s album editorial offers that arrangement perspective.

One specific piece of writing context comes from the label feature: Baker says she wrote “$20” after realizing she wanted “More Sick Riffs” for the band. Alongside the opening song’s family-harmony reference, that detail points to a shared musical vocabulary that can accommodate both instrumental drive and close vocal blend, without reducing the album to a single sound.
In Vogue’s release interview, Dacus discussed queer joy and the group’s cultural context, saying, “just to have shown up and made something that is joyful and realized is a drop in the bucket that I can be proud of.” Her remark is about the value of making joyful work as a visibly queer group; it offers context for the album’s release, not a single key to every song. Vogue’s interview contains the surrounding conversation.
