Boy’s revenge story is built on a false account of his past. He is Hilda Van Der Koy’s son, June-27 is his surviving sister Mina, and the Shaman has manipulated his memories to turn him against the Van Der Koy family. The final fight forces Boy to confront not only the regime but also the mentor who shaped his rage.
What Boy believes before the ending
The film’s dystopian society is ruled by the Van Der Koy clan, which stages the annual Culling as a televised hunt for dissidents. Boy believes Hilda’s family killed his mother and sister and left him deaf and unable to speak. The Shaman takes him in, trains him, and directs his anger toward revenge.
Boy’s inner voice comes from a childhood video game, while an apparent ghost of his sister accompanies him. He joins a resistance group as he enters the Culling. That setup encourages viewers to trust Boy’s memories and the Shaman’s story about his rescue. The ending turns both assumptions inside out.
What the final revelations mean
Boy is Hilda’s son
The ending account reported by Screen Rant, syndicated by Its Prime Media, identifies Boy as Hilda’s son. As a child, he participated in killing dissidents. After he fled, the Shaman captured him and shaped his understanding of what had happened. Boy is therefore both a victim of the regime’s violence and someone implicated in it.

The Shaman changed Boy’s memories
According to that same account, the Shaman used drugs and psychological manipulation to alter Boy’s memories. His apparent rescue and years of training were not simply acts of kindness: the Shaman wanted to use Boy against the Van Der Koys. The mentor who taught Boy to pursue revenge had his own personal reason for doing so.
June-27 is Mina
June-27 is Boy’s living sister, Mina—not merely the imagined, talkative presence he has carried with him. When Hilda orders June to kill Boy, Mina turns against Hilda and kills her instead. Her choice breaks with the command of the ruling family and restores the sibling bond Boy had experienced only as a ghostly companion.

The Shaman’s revenge is personal
The ending account says Boy killed the Shaman’s wife and two children during the Culling. The Shaman spared Boy, then turned him into an instrument of revenge against the Van Der Koys. When Boy and Mina refuse to follow his plan, they fight him. Boy kills the Shaman, and the siblings escape alive.
Why Boy’s revenge story changes
The revelations complicate the idea of a straightforward revenge mission. Boy has legitimate reasons to hate a regime built on public violence, but his memories have been manipulated and his own past is more morally tangled than he knew. The final conflict becomes a choice between continuing to serve someone else’s revenge and rejecting the person who has defined Boy’s life around it.

Mina’s decision matters for the same reason: she refuses Hilda’s order rather than treating obedience as inevitable. Boy and Mina face the Shaman together, ending his control over their immediate lives. This is an interpretation of the reported events, not a confirmed statement of director Moritz Mohr’s intent.
What is resolved—and what remains open
- Resolved: Boy’s connection to Hilda is revealed; June-27 is Mina; the Shaman’s motive is exposed; Hilda and the Shaman are defeated; and Boy and Mina survive.
- Open: The story does not establish what happens to the city after the Van Der Koy family’s rule collapses, or whether the siblings return or remain in hiding. Those possibilities are not confirmed sequel details.
What the director said about the ending
Roadside Attractions’ production notes attribute this comment to director Moritz Mohr: “But when you get to the end, you’re going to be shocked. We are going to take you on a strange and exhilarating journey into a world that looks quite a bit like ours ⎯ at least on the surface.” It is promotional commentary about the film’s experience, not a scene-by-scene explanation of the twists.
