Why Sunday reports show different totals
On Sunday, October 13, the Associated Press reported estimates of $18.3 million for Terrifier 3 and $7.1 million for Joker: Folie à Deux for Friday through Sunday in U.S. and Canadian theaters. AP noted that final domestic figures were due Monday. Those contemporaneous estimates are not the later The Numbers chart totals above; they reflect different reporting moments and rounding. A separate weekly chart covers a longer period
Box Office Mojo’s October 11–17, 2024 weekly chart lists $26,907,151 for Terrifier 3 and $9,706,475 for Joker: Folie à Deux. These totals cover a longer tracking period than the three-day weekend, so they should not be substituted for the weekend grosses. Box Office Mojo weekly chart.

What the upset says—and does not say
The result put a new horror sequel ahead of a major studio film in its second weekend, an unusual matchup of release stages that made the weekend a notable box-office surprise. AP quoted Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian: “This is an outlier of a weekend if ever there was one.” He added that the result showed “the audience is the ultimate arbiter of what wins at the box office.”
One weekend’s ranking does not establish which film will earn more over its full theatrical run. It answers the narrower question of what led the October 11–13 North American chart: Terrifier 3.
