AP said the film fell 62% from its opening weekend and had reached $54.1 million domestically over two weeks. Those figures describe the report’s point-in-time totals, not the film’s eventual lifetime gross. AP also reported a $40 million production budget.
How much did Mufasa: The Lion King make?
Mufasa ranked fourth on AP’s estimated Feb. 7–9 list, with $3.9 million in weekend ticket sales. The headline phrase “roars for the final time” should not be read literally: the available chart information establishes its fourth-place finish that weekend, not that it was the film’s last theatrical weekend.

What opened against Dog Man the next weekend?
Captain America: Brave New World opened Feb. 14–16 and took first place on the domestic chart. Box Office Mojo records its opening-weekend gross at $88,842,603. Dog Man placed fourth with $9,789,985, and Mufasa was sixth with $4,241,970. These are chart figures for that later weekend, not the Feb. 7–9 estimates. See Box Office Mojo’s Feb. 14–16 chart.

Why Dog Man drew attention
The animated film is adapted from Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man graphic novel series, as AP noted in its coverage. That source-material connection helps explain the film’s built-in recognition, while its No. 1 position and reported grosses provide the specific measure of its theatrical performance on this weekend.
For broader context, ScreenDollars, citing Comscore, reported that the Feb. 14–16, 2025, domestic box office totaled $153.3 million, compared with $78.6 million for the corresponding weekend in 2024. That comparison describes the overall market across those weekends, not the performance of any single film. Read ScreenDollars’ Feb. 16 estimates newsletter.
