Boston Blue recast Sean Reagan because the creators wanted a familiar but somewhat different version of the character for a new chapter of his life. Andrew Terraciano played Sean on Blue Bloods; Mika Amonsen took over the role in Boston Blue. Co-creator Brandon Margolis described the choice as creative, not as a rejection of Terraciano’s work.
Why did Boston Blue recast Sean?
Margolis said Sean’s life had changed: he had become a police officer, and the series was entering a new chapter. The team wanted an actor whose energy could take the character in a new direction while keeping him recognizable. In a TVLine interview, Margolis put it this way: “But once we realized we were telling a very new chapter in this character’s life, creatively it made sense to find an actor with a different energy.”
Margolis also said Amonsen’s interpretation retained an important part of Sean: “Mika’s performance calls back to Sean’s vulnerabilities, but he brings a youthful energy that takes the character in a new direction we loved.” The point, then, was a shift in portrayal that fit Sean’s changed circumstances, rather than a complete break with the character viewers already knew.
What did the creators say about Andrew Terraciano?
The creators praised Terraciano’s work on Blue Bloods and said they had watched him grow up on the series. In an interview with Parade, Margolis said Amonsen’s audition had heart and soul and reminded them of Terraciano in several ways. That praise supports the creators’ explanation of the recast as a story-driven choice, not evidence that they were dissatisfied with Terraciano’s performance.

How does the premiere set up Sean’s new chapter?
Boston Blue establishes Sean as a Boston police officer. In the premiere, he and fellow rookie Jonah Silver respond to a building fire and are injured while helping people. Sean wakes in hospital with his father, Danny, at his side; the incident gives Danny a reason to remain in Boston while Sean recovers. The plot establishes the circumstances of Sean’s new life, while the creators’ interviews explain why they chose a new actor for it.

The public explanation from the co-showrunners is creative: they wanted a recognizable Sean with different energy for a changed phase of his life. The cited interviews do not establish a personal, scheduling, or contractual reason for Terraciano’s departure, so claims about those possibilities should not be treated as fact.
