This review covers the 2025 video game Borderlands 4, not the Borderlands film or earlier games. Reviewers find its shooting, loot chase and expanded traversal compelling, but also report design frustrations and PC performance problems on their review setups. Whether it is a good fit depends on how much you value that core loop—and which platform you play on.
What Borderlands 4 is—and what changes
Developed by Gearbox, Borderlands 4 is a loot-driven shooter set on Kairos. Its familiar cycle of fighting enemies, collecting weapons and improving a character remains central. Reviewers describe the world as more open than in earlier entries, with three major biomes and a more seamless structure. A grapple, hover-bike and jump-and-glide movement add ways to explore and engage in combat. The Guardian’s review and TechRadar’s review discuss those changes.
Is the shooting and loot loop fun?
That is the clearest strength in the reviews. TechRadar praises the pursuit of different guns, augments and grenades; PC Gamer likewise describes the loot-driven play as compelling. The appeal is in the repeated cycle of trying new equipment and seeing how it changes a fight. That core can hold attention even when other parts of the game frustrate reviewers, as PC Gamer’s review makes clear.
How well do exploration and missions work?
The larger world and new movement tools broaden the experience beyond combat, but they do not make every trip or diversion worthwhile. Steve Boxer’s Guardian review praises the movement while finding long mission journeys and the directional indicator frustrating. TechRadar also notes that some optional diversions did not repay the time spent on them. The open-world design may suit players who enjoy roaming between fights; those who prefer a tightly directed campaign may be less impressed.

Does the humor and story tone work?
That is subjective. Boxer describes the humor as less juvenile than in previous entries but still hit-or-miss; TechRadar also sees a retreat from dated meme humor. The Guardian’s verdict captures the change without treating it as a complete reinvention: Boxer wrote, “Borderlands 4 has finally matured, to an extent.” That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee that the jokes or story will suit every player.
Is performance a concern?
Review-period PC reports raise a caution, not a universal diagnosis. The Guardian noted occasional crashes and early reports of stuttering. PC Gamer experienced stuttering and slowdown on its review setup; it said a first-week patch helped but did not make performance smooth. Those observations do not establish how the game runs on every PC or how it performs after later updates. If you are considering the PC version, check recent reports for hardware and patch details that match your system before buying.

Platforms, release dates and co-op
TechRadar lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Its review gives September 12, 2025 as the release date for PC and the then-current PlayStation and Xbox versions, and October 3, 2025 for Switch 2. The reviews describe four distinct Vault Hunters and co-op for up to four players, making it an option for groups as well as solo players. Check current platform listings for availability and any edition differences.

- Consider it if you enjoy the hunt for new weapons, repeated combat encounters and experimenting with gear, especially with friends.
- Weigh it carefully if you want every side activity to feel rewarding, prefer friction-free mission navigation, or are sensitive to PC stuttering and crashes.
- Decide based on taste if humor and story tone are a major part of your enjoyment; reviewers see a tonal shift, but not a universally successful one.
