The character is not a real journalist, and the film’s portrayal of Kazakhstan should not be mistaken for factual reporting about the country.
What is Borat about?
The original film, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, is a 2006 comedy directed by Larry Charles. Sacha Baron Cohen plays Borat, a supposed Kazakh reporter who travels to the United States to make a documentary about what makes America a great nation. Ken Davitian and Luenell are among the film’s principal co-stars. The American Film Institute’s catalog entry and Apple TV’s US listing describe the film and its premise.

Borat’s journey provides a comic frame for encounters with people in the United States. The character’s exaggerated manners and assumptions are part of the satire; his supposed national background and statements are not a reliable account of Kazakhstan.
Who plays Borat, and is he a real person?
Borat is a fictional character played by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen. Cohen’s official character page describes Borat as “A television reporter from Kazakhstan whose good manners let real people say what they really thought.” That is the creator’s framing of the character, not a neutral account of every scene or participant. The page dates Borat’s screen appearances to 2000–2006 and 2020. Cohen’s official Borat page

Is the film a real documentary or entirely improvised?
The 2006 film adopts a documentary-like setup: Borat addresses the camera and presents events as a reporter might. But it was not wholly improvised. The AFI production history recounts Cohen’s description of a 60-page outline and a plan to accomplish many scenes. At the same time, interviewees’ reactions could change how a scene unfolded. The result mixes planned comic situations with unscripted responses rather than documenting Borat’s supposed reporting as real journalism. AFI Catalog: Borat
Does Borat speak authentic Kazakh?
No. AFI notes that the film’s purported Kazakh language is a mixture of Israeli slang and Hebrew. Borat’s speech is part of the performance, not an example of authentic Kazakh. This distinction matters because the character’s invented identity and the film’s comic framing should not be confused with Kazakhstan’s real language or culture. AFI Catalog: Borat

Where can you watch Borat?
Availability depends on country and can change as streaming rights shift. Apple TV has a US catalog page for the original film, but a catalog page alone does not establish that it is currently included with a subscription or available to stream in every region. Check the listing in your country for current rental, purchase, or subscription options. An older WGA East article mentions the sequel streaming on Amazon Prime, but that historical reference does not confirm present-day availability. Apple TV US listing · WGA East article
