Waverley Council described the event as a promotion for the international launch of the latest Borat film.
What happened at Bondi?
Waverley Council’s Annual Report 2020–21, published in 2021, records that a six-metre Borat statue was delivered by helicopter to Marks Park. The associated filming took place around Bondi, rather than only at the statue’s arrival point.
The promotion featured Borat lookalikes surfing, spear fishing, skateboarding and exercising at the Bondi Outdoor gym. The council singled out forty lookalikes performing yoga on the beach as the event’s highlight.
When did the event take place?
The council places the promotion in October 2020 but does not give an exact day. It describes it as a major film promotion for the international launch of the latest Borat film; its report does not provide the film’s full title.

Who was involved, and what is documented?
Waverley Council says the production was undertaken in conjunction with Screen NSW and Amazon Prime. The annual report documents the event’s month, locations, activities and stated purpose, but does not name individual performers or explain who made or funded the statue.
The report also gives no attendance, cost, viewership or campaign-reach figures. It therefore supports an account of what was staged, not a measured claim about how many people saw it or what impact it had.
