In Sayari Debnath’s October 6, 2024, review for Scroll.in, Percival Everett’s James is a caustic, witty retelling of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that shifts the story’s center from Huck to Jim. Debnath reads the novel’s journey down the Mississippi as an examination of how racism adapts: Jim must navigate both overt violence and the everyday expectations that govern his survival.
What is James about?
Debnath describes James as an energetic reimagining of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, told from Jim’s perspective. In the review’s account, Jim flees after hearing that Miss Watson may sell him away from his wife and children. He hopes to find a way to secure his family’s freedom.
Huck is also on the run, escaping an abusive father. The two travel together along the Mississippi, encountering danger, exploitation and people who seek to manipulate them. Their companionship matters, but it unfolds within a world structured by enslavement and racial power.
How does the change in viewpoint reshape the story?
With Jim at the narrative center, the review foregrounds the distance between what he shows white people and what he thinks and knows. Debnath describes Jim as self-educated, having learned to read and write by sneaking into his enslaver’s library. Around white people, he changes his speech and behavior as a deliberate means of self-protection.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That performance is more than a disguise: it reflects the danger Jim faces if he is seen as violating the roles imposed on him. Huck can be protective of Jim, but affection does not erase the racial hierarchy shaping their choices. Debnath’s reading emphasizes that Jim understands the stakes of a perceived transgression in a way Huck cannot simply undo.
How does the review interpret the novel’s treatment of racism?
Debnath connects Jim’s strategic self-presentation to the novel’s broader account of racism as both direct violence and a system of daily expectations. The review also points to episodes involving con artists, men claiming to be a duke and a king, and violence Jim witnesses and experiences. These encounters sit alongside his effort to protect his family and move toward freedom.

For Debnath, the historical setting lets Everett examine racism’s persistence without treating its expressions as fixed. The review’s closing idea is that racism “simply changes shape to what is ‘acceptable’ of a time.” That is the reviewer’s interpretation of the novel, not a neutral consensus or a claim that its setting and present-day conditions are identical.
Is James funny?
Debnath calls the novel “caustic and witty” while resisting the idea that “funny” adequately describes it. The distinction captures the tension in the review: wit can sharpen the book’s critique, but the violence and danger surrounding Jim make easy comic labels feel insufficient.
