Easterine Kire’s 2019 novel A Respectable Woman makes Kohima’s history intimate: it follows two generations of Angami women as memories of the 1944 invasion and its aftermath pass from mother to daughter. The result is not a documentary account of the Battle of Kohima, but a family story in which war, rebuilding and social change shape ordinary lives.

What is A Respectable Woman about?

Published by Zubaan in 2019, the novel begins with Khonuo, known in her family as Azuo, and the memories of her childhood during the war. As she recounts what she remembers to her daughter, Kevinuo, the narrative moves between wartime Kohima and the daughter’s later life in a changed Nagaland. Family relationships, marriages, deaths and daily decisions carry the story across those generations.

This structure makes inherited memory the link between the book’s historical and coming-of-age strands. Khonuo’s recollections give the past a personal scale; Kevinuo’s experiences show how expectations and pressures continue to change after the war. A review by Makepeace Sitlhou in Scroll describes the book as a coming-of-age story about two generations of Angami women.

Is the novel based on Kohima’s history?

The novel is grounded in memories of the 1944 invasion and in the changing life of Kohima, but it is fiction rather than a neutral or comprehensive history of the battle. Kire told The Morung Express that she drew on oral tradition, her mother’s wartime memories, incidents from her own life and recollections from older relatives and Naga elders. She also said those elders helped her map Kohima.

Kire explained that the first-person narrator is not the author herself: “The protagonist of the book is not me, nor is it my voice, but I have used the first-person narrative as it creates more intimacy.” The novel’s historical perspective is therefore shaped through storytelling and remembered experience, not presented as an exhaustive record. A scholarly reading of Kire’s work alongside Mari interprets these novels as memory fiction that reconstructs the Battle of Kohima through survivors’ recollections and situates local cultural memory in Naga literary expression.

Who are Khonuo and Kevinuo?

Khonuo: childhood remembered

Khonuo’s wartime childhood anchors the novel’s account of Kohima during and after the invasion. Her memories are told later to her daughter, so the past reaches the reader through a family act of remembering rather than through an external historical narrator.

Kevinuo: growing up in a changed Nagaland

Kevinuo’s part of the story carries the narrative into a later generation. Her choices and relationships bring the book’s questions about education, marriage and women’s place in the community into focus. In Sitlhou’s reading, Kevinuo resists prescribed expectations and is influenced by the strong women around her.

What does respectability mean in the novel?

Respectability is a social judgment with consequences for women’s lives, not simply a mark of good conduct. The novel considers how a woman’s choices around education and marriage are measured against community expectations, and how those expectations can constrain her. Its women’s agency is shown in the pressures they negotiate, the relationships they sustain and the decisions they make—not as a simple story of empowerment detached from social cost.

Reviews also discuss domestic violence, female solidarity and the harm associated with alcohol. The novel places those experiences within family and community life. Sitlhou connects Kire’s work to a gap in indigenous feminist writing about Northeast India; that is the reviewer’s critical argument, not a quantified account of the publishing field.

How does the novel connect family life and political change?

Rather than treating war and political upheaval as distant backdrops, Kire brings them into homes, relationships and remembered places. The family’s milestones and routines sit alongside destruction and rebuilding, making the scale deliberately local: history is encountered through the lives of people who have to carry on within it.

The book also addresses alcohol-related harm and the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1989, in the context of the novel’s social concerns. That treatment should not be taken as a guide to the law’s current status or operation; the novel and the reviews discussed here are not current legal sources.

Who might value this book?

A Respectable Woman may suit readers interested in fiction shaped by family memory, women’s lives and the history of Kohima, especially those who want to encounter the past through a Naga literary perspective. Its two-generation form links a wartime childhood to a daughter’s coming of age, while keeping its focus on intimate experience rather than claiming to document the whole history of the battle.

Readers looking for more of Kire’s work may note that Sitlhou describes Mari as focused on the Japanese invasion of Kohima and the postwar years, while Sky is My Father: A Naga Village Remembered concerns the nineteenth-century clash between the British and Nagas. These brief distinctions identify different historical frames, not a full comparative assessment.
