Mohar Basu’s book excerpt traces that return as a moment of reassessment: Khan came back with renewed energy and a long-held ambition to become an action hero.
After Zero, a pause and a question
In her October 29, 2024, Scroll excerpt from Shah Rukh Khan: Legend, Icon, Star, author Mohar Basu presents the road to Pathaan as a career turning point. After Zero, Khan took a break from work. Basu describes the interval as a period of reassessment and the return as an opportunity to reset expectations. That account is the excerpt’s framing; it does not independently establish Khan’s private motives.

The question hanging over a return after a pause was, in Basu’s telling, “What next?” The answer was a Yash Raj Films action project, a genre Khan had wanted to make his own for decades.
The action-hero ambition
Basu connects the ambition to Darr, recalling Khan’s description of how that earlier film shaped his expectations for his career: “In Darr, I was doing action, running, shooting guns, and I thought – this is my path now. I am going to be an action hero.” The quote captures an aspiration, not a claim that every subsequent role followed that path.

Aditya Chopra, quoted in the excerpt about Khan’s relationship to action, offered a contrasting impression: “He is a soft, nice guy who pretends to be all macho. He says he likes action but he is not like that.” Read together, the remarks suggest the tension that makes the casting idea interesting: the action-hero persona was an ambition, while Chopra saw a softer temperament beneath it.
Returning to work on Pathaan
Scroll dates the start of filming to 20 November 2020, at Yash Raj Films. Basu reports Khan describing the feeling of being back at work in an interview with Robin Uthapa: “When I started working again, there was this strange hunger and newness to work [in me]. Ever since I have returned, I feel bigger, better, faster and happier.”
The words are Khan’s as quoted in Basu’s excerpt, and they describe his own experience of returning. They give the career narrative its emotional hinge: not simply a move into an action film, but a renewed appetite for work after the break.
What Pathaan became
Yash Raj Films lists the film’s release date as 25 January 2023. Its official page credits Siddharth Anand as director and story writer, Aditya Chopra as producer, Shridhar Raghavan for the screenplay, and Abbas Tyrewala for the dialogues. Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and John Abraham are listed in the cast.
The studio’s synopsis follows an agent who, after recovering from injuries, helps form JOCR and confronts mercenary Jim and a planned attack called Operation Raktabeej. That is the film’s on-screen premise; Basu’s excerpt is concerned with the career journey that brought Khan to the project.
