Boneyard is a 2024 crime thriller directed by Asif Akbar. It follows a multi-agency investigation after the remains of eleven women and girls are found in the New Mexico desert, with Mel Gibson, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Brian Van Holt among the leads. The film is described as inspired by true crime, but the available descriptions do not establish a direct, scene-by-scene account of a particular real investigation.
What is Boneyard (2024) about?
The discovery of eleven women’s and girls’ remains in the New Mexico desert sets off the film’s central investigation. The story follows three investigators: Police Chief Carter, played by Curtis Jackson (50 Cent); Detective Ortega, played by Brian Van Holt; and Agent Petrovick, played by Mel Gibson. The plot centers on the work and tensions involved in a multi-agency case.
Catalog descriptions characterize the film as inspired by true crime. Film Nevada calls it “Inspired by the true events of a serial killer that may still be out there today,” while Rotten Tomatoes describes it as inspired by true crime stories. Those are promotional and catalog descriptions, not proof of a precise historical correspondence. The reviewed sources do not identify real-life counterparts for the characters or establish that the film recreates a specific investigation in detail.
Who directed and wrote Boneyard?
Asif Akbar directed the film. Rotten Tomatoes credits Hank Byrd and Koji Steven Sakai as screenwriters and Lionsgate as distributor. Prime Video identifies Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation as the studio; these are the labels used by the respective catalogs.

What are the ratings and content warnings?
Ratings depend on territory and should not be treated as interchangeable. Rotten Tomatoes lists a US R rating for language throughout, drug use, sexual content and violence. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) gives UK advice that includes strong language, violence, sex references, drug misuse and sexual violence. Its detailed notes also refer to scenes of threat and coercion, drug use, and images of decomposed bodies. Viewers who want more specific UK guidance should consult the BBFC classification record before watching.

Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 44% Tomatometer score from 9 critic reviews when checked in 2026. Aggregator scores can change as reviews are added or records are updated, so that figure is a dated snapshot rather than a permanent rating. FilmWeek critic Andy Klein wrote: “It’s interesting, but you have to know going in that the basic case was never solved, and they stay true to that.”
