Who was Bobby Whitlock?
Born March 18, 1948, Whitlock grew up in Millington, Tennessee, near Memphis. He developed as a keyboard player in the church and Memphis music scenes and became connected with Stax Records. That musical foundation shaped the gospel-inflected, soulful keyboard style he brought to later recordings.
Whitlock joined Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, where he met Eric Clapton. In 1970, Clapton formed Derek and the Dominos with Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle and drummer Jim Gordon, as outlined in Clapton’s official biography.

What did Whitlock contribute to Derek and the Dominos?
Whitlock was more than the band’s keyboard player: he also sang and co-wrote songs. The group’s defining record was Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, released in 1970 and the band’s only studio album. Whitlock played keyboards and sang, and co-wrote several tracks with Clapton, including “Bell Bottom Blues” and “Tell the Truth,” according to the Guardian and Pitchfork.
Duane Allman played guitar on the album as a guest; he was not a formal member of Derek and the Dominos. Elton John later recalled watching Whitlock’s playing with the group, praising its “soulful, deep Southern gospel feel,” as quoted by the Los Angeles Times.

Whitlock’s work beyond the Dominos
His career also included session work on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass and recordings by Dr. John and the Rolling Stones. Whitlock released his self-titled solo debut in 1972, a reminder that his musical life extended well beyond his best-known band. The Guardian and Pitchfork’s career accounts document these sessions and solo releases.
