In a 2007 interview, he said doctors had told him he was cancer free after radiation and chemotherapy. Later accounts described major jaw and speech problems after surgeries, and obituaries attributed his death in 2017 to cancer complications. Those reports describe different points in time; they do not establish a continuous treatment history or a specific cancer subtype.
What health problems did Bobby Heenan have?
Public accounts of Heenan’s health center on throat cancer, treatment with radiation and chemotherapy, a non-healing wound after a tooth extraction, reconstructive jaw surgery, and lasting difficulty speaking. The available reporting is not a clinical record, so it cannot establish a precise diagnosis beyond the descriptions used by the outlets or explain the medical reasons for each surgery.
Timeline of Bobby Heenan’s reported health problems
2002: Cancer diagnosis reported
Later obituaries reported that Heenan was diagnosed with cancer in 2002. The Los Angeles Times described it as cancer of the throat and tongue. The public accounts cited here do not specify a subtype or provide clinical records.
July 2007: Heenan said doctors considered him cancer free
In an interview published July 31, 2007, Heenan said he had completed radiation and chemotherapy and that doctors had told him he was cancer free. He also described a wound that would not heal after a tooth was removed following radiation. His words were: “They’ve (doctors) said I’m cancer free. I’ve already had my radiation, I’ve already had my chemo. I’m fine.” This was Heenan’s account at that time, not an independently reviewed medical finding or a statement about his later condition. Jaw reconstruction and loss of speech
WWE reported that Heenan was recovering in hospital after a second reconstructive jaw surgery. Its update said the reconstruction was complete and successful, but that he could not talk and communicated with a chalkboard. A later WWE update said he had returned home after several months in hospital and remained unable to speak. The pages do not provide reliable publication dates, exact surgery dates, or a clinical explanation for the reconstruction. (WWE recovery update; WWE homecoming update.)
Long-term effects and death in 2017
The Washington Post reported that subsequent surgeries left Heenan’s voice thin and raspy and his face disfigured. The Los Angeles Times also described multiple tongue surgeries, reconstruction of his lower jaw, and loss of his ability to talk. The Washington Post reported that Heenan died at home in Largo, Florida, on September 17, 2017, aged 72, from complications of throat cancer; the Los Angeles Times likewise attributed his death to cancer complications. WWE’s obituary confirms his death and age but does not state a medical cause.
