Neuwirth’s association with Dylan grew from the New York folk scene of the 1960s. He became part of Dylan’s circle and appeared in the cultural record around Dylan’s early career, including the world represented by the cover photograph for Highway 61 Revisited. The Guardian’s obituary provides an account of that relationship and his later collaboration with Dylan.
How did Bob Neuwirth influence Bob Dylan?
Neuwirth’s influence is best understood through collaboration and the artistic environment he helped create, rather than as a claim that he caused a particular lyric, song or musical decision. His clearest documented contribution was helping assemble the band for Dylan’s 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue. He also participated in the tour’s broader creative world, including the film Renaldo & Clara.

The Revue brought together musicians including T Bone Burnett and David Mansfield. Neuwirth’s work connecting people and shaping the tour’s ensemble makes him an important collaborator in Dylan’s circle, even though the available accounts do not identify a specific Dylan composition or arrangement that Neuwirth directly shaped.
What did Neuwirth do on the Rolling Thunder Revue?
In 1975, Neuwirth helped put together the band for the Rolling Thunder Revue, Dylan’s touring project. His contribution was organizational as well as artistic: he helped gather the musicians who played within a tour conceived as a lively, collaborative performance world. Neuwirth was also involved in Renaldo & Clara, the film associated with the Revue, extending his work beyond the stage.
The official biography and the Guardian obituary support this account of his role. They establish his importance to the tour’s assembly and creative setting, not a more specific claim about authorship of Dylan’s songs.
Did Bob Neuwirth write “Mercedes Benz” with Janis Joplin?
Yes. Neuwirth co-wrote “Mercedes Benz” with Janis Joplin in 1970. The Guardian describes the song’s origin in a New York bar conversation and songwriting session. Joplin recorded it shortly before her death; it appeared on Pearl. The collaboration remains one of Neuwirth’s best-known songwriting credits.
