After the May 6, 2024 finale, Billy Gardell said the closing scene was difficult to finish because the cast and crew were emotional—and saw its health-related callback as a sign of how Bob’s love for Abishola helped him get well.

In the future shown, Abishola is a doctor, while Bob hands over the family compression-sock business. The couple also returns to the bench associated with their relationship, giving the finale a visual callback to their shared history. TheWrap’s report on the finale describes that return as part of the episode’s full-circle closure.
Why does the finale jump seven years ahead?
The time jump lets the ending show the lives Bob and Abishola have built rather than stopping at a short-term milestone. Abishola’s work as a doctor makes her professional ambition visible in the future, while Bob’s decision to hand over the business signals a change in what fulfillment means to him.

Before the finale aired, Folake Olowofoyeku described Abishola as having achieved her American dream and becoming a well-respected doctor. Gardell said Bob had entrusted the business to a loyal employee and found satisfaction in making the right choice instead of the most lucrative one. Those were the actors’ descriptions of their characters’ futures in a TV Insider interview published before the finale.
What did Billy Gardell say about the emotional last scene?
After the finale aired, Gardell told TribLive, as reported by TV Insider, “I’m very proud of this.” He said the final scene took “two to three times” to complete because those involved had tears in their eyes. Gardell described it as an intimate moment shared with the crew and fans, rather than simply a difficult scene to perform.
Gardell also connected the ending’s blood-pressure moment to the pilot, in which Abishola cared for Bob after his heart attack. He interpreted the callback as showing how the relationship had changed Bob’s life: “It showed in a beautiful way that the love Bob found for Abishola helped get him healthy.” That is Gardell’s reading of the scene, not a separate explanation stated in CBS’s synopsis. His post-finale reflections appear in TV Insider’s report.
How did the creators describe the ending’s meaning?
Co-creator Gina Yashere and executive producer Matt Ross framed the finale as a close to the characters’ story as well as a statement about the series. In TheWrap’s account, they described the ending as sweet and full-circle, with Abishola’s career advancing, Bob handing on the company, and the couple revisiting the bench.

Ross emphasized that the relationship was based on affection rather than convenience: “These characters are not connected by circumstance. They’re connected by how they feel about each other.” Yashere and Ross also spoke about the show’s legacy in terms of Nigerian-American representation, cultural comedy, and a love story. Those are the creators’ characterizations of the series’ significance, not independently measured claims about its cultural impact.

The time jump changes the characters’ circumstances; the bench preserves an emotional link to where their relationship began. Together, the future milestones and the familiar location let the finale show both change and continuity: Bob and Abishola have moved forward in their lives, but their connection remains central. TheWrap identifies the bench as a place tied to their relationship, while Gardell’s post-finale comments place the health callback within the story of Bob’s transformation.
The finale aired on CBS on May 6, 2024. The original CBS announcement also said it would be available on Paramount+ under the terms stated at that time; that announcement is historical and does not establish current streaming availability or plan details.
