The two marriages belonged to very different periods of Dylan’s career. His relationship with Sara was closely tied to his rise from influential songwriter to international star, while his marriage to Dennis remained largely private until it was disclosed publicly in 2001.
Together, the marriages produced five children, including Dylan’s best-known musical heir, Jakob Dylan. They also became part of the discussion around songs, films and biographies that have shaped the public image of Dylan’s private life.

Sara Dylan was Bob Dylan’s first wife
Bob Dylan married Sara Lownds on November 22, 1965. She became known publicly as Sara Dylan. At the time, Dylan was already a major figure in the folk and rock scenes, but his fame and career were still expanding rapidly.
Sara had a daughter, Maria Lownds, from a previous marriage. Dylan adopted Maria, and the couple later had four children together:

The marriage lasted nearly twelve years. Their divorce was finalized on June 29, 1977, after a period in which Dylan’s public life and artistic output were receiving intense scrutiny.
Sara appeared in Renaldo and Clara
Sara Dylan’s most visible creative connection to her husband came through Dylan’s 1978 film Renaldo and Clara. She appeared as Clara, a role recorded in the film’s credits. The project blended concert footage, fictional scenes and documentary-style material, making it difficult to separate Dylan’s personal mythology from the film’s constructed narrative.
Her appearance did not turn Sara into a public performer in the conventional sense. Instead, it remains one of the clearest examples of how Dylan incorporated people from his personal world into his artistic work.
What does Bob Dylan’s song “Sara” mean?
Dylan’s song “Sara” appeared on his 1976 album Desire. The official Bob Dylan website identifies it as a Dylan composition and publishes lyrics that directly address Sara, mention “the children” and describe her as his “mystical wife.”

The song is therefore plainly connected to Sara by name and subject. Its emotional meaning, however, is still filtered through Dylan’s songwriting style. It should not automatically be treated as a literal transcript of the couple’s marriage or as a complete account of their relationship.
Was Blood on the Tracks about Sara?
Many critics and biographers have linked the tension on Blood on the Tracks, released in 1975, to difficulties in Dylan’s marriage to Sara. That interpretation has become one of the most persistent stories surrounding the album, especially because of the record’s themes of separation, regret and emotional conflict.
It remains an interpretation, not an established fact. Dylan denied that the album was autobiographical. The songs may draw on personal feeling, but there is no sound basis for presenting every character or event on Blood on the Tracks as a direct account of the Dylan marriage.
Carolyn Dennis was Dylan’s second wife
Carolyn Dennis was a gospel and rock singer who worked as one of Dylan’s backing singers. She was also professionally known as Carol Dennis. Dylan married her on June 4, 1986.
Rank #3
The couple already had a child together. Their daughter, Desiree Gabrielle Dennis-Dylan, was born on January 31, 1986, several months before the wedding. Dylan and Carolyn Dennis divorced in October 1992. Some online databases give 1990 as the divorce year, but biographical reference sources and contemporary reporting support 1992.
Why was the marriage to Carolyn Dennis kept private?
Dennis explained in a 2001 statement that she and Dylan had mutually decided to keep both the marriage and their daughter’s identity private. Their stated aim was to give Desiree a normal childhood away from the attention surrounding Dylan.
According to Dennis, the California marriage certificate was sealed. She also said Dylan was initially not listed as the father on Desiree’s birth certificate as part of the privacy arrangement. These details help explain why earlier accounts sometimes described Dennis as merely Dylan’s girlfriend rather than his wife.
Dennis also rejected portrayals suggesting that Dylan had hidden from or abandoned their daughter. She said he was an active father. Claims that Dylan’s extensive touring in the 1990s was driven by a multimillion-dollar divorce settlement were likewise disputed by Dennis and should not be repeated as established fact.

When did the public learn about Carolyn Dennis?
The marriage and the existence of Desiree became widely known after Howard Sounes published the unauthorized biography Down the Highway: The Life of Bob Dylan in 2001. Dennis then issued a statement intended to correct what she described as errors and misleading impressions in the book and the coverage that followed it.
The disclosure changed the standard public account of Dylan’s personal life. For years, biographies and media reports had often focused heavily on Sara while leaving out the second marriage or describing it inaccurately. Dennis’s statement established that she and Dylan had in fact been married and explained why the relationship had not been part of the public record earlier.
