Bob Dylan’s Dylanesque Thoughts on the “Sorcery” of Technology

Bob Dylan’s comments on technology are ambivalent: it can hamper creativity or help people push beyond familiar limits, while its larger consequences remain uncertain.

Bob Dylan’s view of technology is deliberately mixed: it can hamper creativity, or help someone escape familiar limits and make something new. In a Q&A with interviewer Jeff Slate about The Philosophy of Modern Song, Dylan calls technology “like sorcery” while warning that it might threaten civilization. His remarks are less a manifesto than an open-ended reflection on what people make of their tools.

Where Dylan’s comments come from

The remarks appear in a Q&A with Jeff Slate connected to Dylan’s book The Philosophy of Modern Song, not in a standalone speech devoted to technology. Slate asks whether technology aids or hinders everyday life, especially creativity. Read the Q&A transcript on the Official Bob Dylan Site.

Technology can help creativity—or get in its way

Dylan’s first answer is concise: “I think it does both.” He says technology can hamper creativity, but can also “lend a helping hand and be an assistant.” A data-processing machine or software program, in his account, might help a person break out of ordinary constraints. He pairs that possibility with an emphasis on discipline and imagination: a tool may assist, but the person still has to do the creative work.

Dylan also offers a skeptical view of what machines understand. “Creative ability is about pulling old elements together and making something new,” he says, adding that he does not believe silicon chips and passwords know those elements or where they are. That is Dylan’s perspective in the interview, not a technical assessment of what software can or cannot do.

Why he calls technology “like sorcery”

Dylan’s striking metaphor captures technology’s power to seem almost magical—and its unsettling potential. He says: “Technology is like sorcery, it’s a magic show, conjures up spirits, it’s an extension of our body, like the wheel is an extension of our foot. But it might be the final nail driven into the coffin of civilization; we just don’t know.” The uncertainty is part of the point: he describes both human extension and possible danger without claiming to know technology’s ultimate consequences.

His examples span radically different results of human ingenuity: the Parthenon, the Egyptian pyramids and the Brooklyn Bridge, alongside rockets and weapons of mass destruction. Technology and science, in this framing, are not inherently benevolent or destructive; their consequences depend on what people build and how those creations are used.

From Dylan’s ambivalence to everyday digital distraction

In a January 4, 2025 essay, Ars Technica’s Nate Anderson takes Dylan’s “helping hand” idea into his own creative life. Anderson describes using technology for writing, recording, painting prototypes and guitar lessons, while also noting the interruptions of email, messaging, streaming and algorithmic feeds. Those are his personal examples, not evidence that technology has one predictable effect on everyone’s attention or creativity. Read Nate Anderson’s reflection at Ars Technica.

That tension makes Dylan’s answer useful beyond the interview: a tool can expand what someone is able to do while also competing for their time and focus. The relevant question is not simply whether technology is good or bad, but which uses support the work a person wants to do—and which uses pull them away from it.

A question to take into your own year

Anderson closes with a question for readers: “Do you have any plans, systems, or even wildly improbable goals in place to productively govern your tech use this year?” It is an invitation to reflect, not a prescription or a claim that one system works for everyone. Dylan’s comments leave room for both sides of the answer: technology can be an assistant, a distraction, an extension of human ability, and a source of consequences people cannot fully predict.
