Bluesky vs. X (Twitter): Everything You Need to Know

Bluesky and X offer similar public posting, but their underlying models differ. Compare feeds, moderation, reach, identity, features, monetization and migration before choosing.

Bluesky and X (formerly Twitter) are not interchangeable versions of the same service. Bluesky is a social app built on the AT Protocol, an open protocol designed around portable identity, selectable feeds and composable moderation. X is a centralized platform with broader established reach and a more mature integrated feature and monetization stack.

Choose Bluesky if control and open-web identity matter most. Choose X if you need its existing audience, media and messaging tools, Lists, Communities, Premium features or creator programs. Many users will sensibly use both.

Bluesky vs. X: the short version

Bluesky and X (formerly Twitter) look similar on the surface: both are public-conversation networks built around short posts, replies, reposts, links, images and video. Their underlying models are different, however.

Bluesky is the better fit if you value an open protocol, selectable feeds, portable identity, custom-domain handles and more configurable moderation. X is the better fit if you need established reach, mature messaging and media features, Communities, Lists, Premium tools or a more developed creator-monetization system. Many people will get the best practical result by using both for different purposes.

Category Bluesky X
Core model A social app built on the open AT Protocol, with multiple services and applications possible around the network. A centralized, company-operated social platform.
Discovery Users can install and switch among custom feeds, including feeds built by third-party developers. For You, Following, Lists, Communities, search and recommendation systems are built into the X product.
Moderation Bluesky’s baseline enforcement is combined with selectable labeling and moderation services. X uses its own rules and enforcement systems and also offers Community Notes for added context.
Identity Users may use a domain name as their handle, and the protocol is designed with account portability in mind. Accounts and identity are tied to the X service.
Audience A large and growing network, but generally smaller and less established than X for broad mainstream reach. A more mature public-conversation network with a larger established ecosystem in many industries and communities.
Features Its main advantages are feed choice, protocol openness, developer access and composable moderation. More integrated media, messaging, community, Premium and creator tools.
Monetization No comparable mature creator-revenue stack is established in the research for this article. Premium, creator subscriptions and creator-revenue programs are available subject to eligibility and changing requirements.

What is Bluesky?

Bluesky is a public-conversation social application operated by Bluesky Social, PBC. It runs on the Authenticated Transfer Protocol, usually called the AT Protocol.

The important distinction is that Bluesky is not merely another centralized Twitter clone. The AT Protocol is intended to let different parts of a social network work together: users can have portable identities and data, developers can build alternative clients and feeds, and moderation or labeling services can be added as separate layers.

You do not need to understand servers, protocols or programming to use Bluesky. Most people can simply create an account and use the standard Bluesky app. The protocol architecture operates underneath the familiar timeline and posting interface.

Is Bluesky really decentralized?

“Decentralized” needs qualification. Bluesky is not a company-free, rule-free network. Bluesky Social operates the main app, provides much of the default user experience, sets baseline rules and carries out moderation on its service.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is different is the architecture around that app. The AT Protocol separates several functions that are commonly bundled together inside one social-media company:

  • Personal data servers: These host a user’s repository and handle account-related functions.
  • Relays: These gather and distribute network data so that participating applications can discover activity.
  • App views: These assemble network data into the feeds and interfaces people use.
  • Feed generators: These provide alternative algorithms for selecting and arranging posts.
  • Labeling services: These can classify content or accounts and add moderation or filtering information.

In a traditional centralized network, the company normally controls the account system, storage, feed-ranking system, moderation tools and user interface as one product. The AT Protocol makes those layers more separable.

That separation creates more choice, but it does not guarantee that every application will support every feature. A different AT Protocol service may have different policies, moderation labels, interfaces or levels of compatibility. Portability is an architectural goal and capability of the ecosystem, not a promise that an account will look identical everywhere after a move.

How Bluesky’s feeds differ from X’s algorithm

The common misconception is that Bluesky has algorithms while X does not. Both platforms use algorithms. The difference is how much control the user gets over the algorithmic layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluesky: feeds are a central feature

Bluesky includes default feeds, but users can also install feeds created by other people and developers. A feed might focus on particular accounts, subjects, keywords or types of activity. Developers can create feed generators with their own selection and ranking logic.

This turns the timeline into something closer to a collection of channels. Instead of relying entirely on one company’s recommendation system, you can choose feeds that reflect different interests or communities. The number of available feeds is large and changes over time, so any fixed count should be treated as temporary.

X: centralized discovery with several controls

X offers its own discovery tools, including:

  • For You, a recommendation-driven timeline;
  • Following, a timeline focused on accounts you follow;
  • Lists, which let you group accounts by subject and view their posts together;
  • Communities, which organize conversations around specific interests;
  • Search and other recommendation surfaces.

X has also published portions of information about its recommendation systems and made parts of recommendation code and data available for public inspection. That does not make X equivalent to Bluesky’s open protocol model: discovery still operates inside a single company-controlled service.

Practical difference: Bluesky gives you more choice about which feeds you install. X gives you a mature, integrated discovery system with useful tools such as Lists, Communities and search.

Moderation and safety: configurable versus centralized

Neither platform is accurately described as “unmoderated,” and neither has a perfect solution to harassment, misinformation, spam, illegal content or mistaken enforcement.

How Bluesky moderates content

Bluesky’s baseline moderation combines automated detection, human review, user reports, enforcement actions and appeals. Bluesky Social remains responsible for the baseline rules and final enforcement decisions on its own service.

Bluesky also supports composable moderation. Additional labeling services can classify content or accounts according to a particular community’s preferences. A user may be able to subscribe to or apply different labeling layers rather than relying only on one universal moderation setting.

This model offers flexibility. A researcher, journalist, community or organization could want a different way to identify topics or filter content than the default app provides. The trade-off is that moderation can become less uniform: two users may see different labels or filtering results depending on the services they use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluesky’s 2025 Transparency Report described 24/7 moderation operations, human review of reports and appeals, automated systems for scale, and significant reporting activity. It reported 9.97 million user reports in 2025 and 1.41 billion posts created during that year. Those figures show that Bluesky’s safety challenge is now operating at substantial scale rather than at the level of a small experimental community.

How X moderates content

X uses company rules, automated systems, human enforcement and user reporting. It also offers Community Notes, through which contributors can propose contextual notes about posts.

According to X’s description of the system, a note becomes publicly visible when it receives enough helpful ratings from contributors with differing viewpoints. Community Notes are intended to add context, do not represent X’s own viewpoint and do not automatically remove the post they discuss.

The difference is therefore not “moderation versus no moderation.” Bluesky emphasizes user-selectable moderation layers alongside a company-operated baseline. X emphasizes centralized enforcement and adds a crowdsourced context system. Both approaches involve trade-offs around consistency, abuse, false positives and the limits of automated or community-based judgment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Users, growth and reach

Bluesky is no longer a tiny experimental network. Its official FAQ reported more than 44 million users as of May 2026. Its 2025 Transparency Report recorded growth from 25.94 million users to 41.41 million during 2025.

Those numbers should not be treated as a direct apples-to-apples comparison with an X user total. Social platforms use different definitions, reporting periods and measurement methods, and a current comparable X figure is not established in the research for this article.

The practical conclusion is more useful than a raw leaderboard: Bluesky has a substantial and growing audience, but X remains the more established network for broad mainstream reach and the more mature ecosystem of media, creators, organizations and communities.

Bluesky may nevertheless be especially relevant to journalists, researchers, academics, writers, open-web advocates and organizations interested in custom feeds or domain-based identity. That is an audience-fit inference based on Bluesky’s features, not a claim that every member of those groups prefers Bluesky.

Posting, media and everyday features

What X offers

X supports standard posts containing text, links, photos, GIFs and video. The standard post limit is 280 characters. Longer posts are available to Premium subscribers, along with other expanded capabilities.

Depending on the Premium tier, platform and location, X documentation lists features such as:

  • editing posts;
  • longer text posts;
  • longer video uploads;
  • text formatting;
  • bookmark folders;
  • reply prioritization;
  • the ability to create Communities;
  • checkmarks and reduced advertising in some areas;
  • creator subscriptions; and
  • eligibility to apply for creator-revenue-sharing programs, subject to requirements.

These benefits are not universal guarantees. X changes its Premium tiers and policies, and availability can vary by country, operating system, account and subscription level.

What makes Bluesky different

Bluesky’s main advantage is not simply a different character limit or a duplicate set of media tools. Its distinctive features are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • custom feeds and third-party feed generators;
  • an open protocol that other developers can build on;
  • portable identity and data as part of the AT Protocol design;
  • the option to use a domain as a handle;
  • composable moderation and labeling; and
  • official APIs and developer resources for bots, custom feeds and client applications.

If your priority is uploading media, managing a large existing audience, using direct messages and Communities, or accessing an integrated Premium package, X has the broader mature feature stack. If your priority is choosing how discovery and moderation work, Bluesky is more distinctive.

Domain handles and identity portability

Bluesky allows a user to use a domain name as a handle. That can connect a social identity to a person, publication, organization or business website. For example, a publication may prefer an identity associated with its own domain rather than a generic username.

A domain is not required to use Bluesky. It is an advanced identity option, not a sign-up prerequisite. If you want one, you will need control of a domain and its configuration, which creates a legitimate reason to use a domain registrar or DNS provider. Compare renewal pricing, DNS controls and support before choosing one; no particular merchant is required by Bluesky.

Portability is another important AT Protocol goal. In principle, identity and social data such as follow relationships can move between participating services more easily than they can between conventional centralized platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not interpret that as a complete “move my account” button that reproduces everything everywhere. Portability does not automatically transfer an X audience, X Lists, X Communities, X Premium benefits, X subscriptions or X creator-program eligibility. It also does not guarantee identical moderation, features or policies on every participating application.

Developers and custom tools

Bluesky’s open-protocol design creates more room for experimentation. Its developer documentation includes APIs and starter resources for bots, custom feeds and client applications. Developers can build services that interact with the network without waiting for every idea to become an official Bluesky feature.

This matters to communities as well as programmers. A publication might want a feed for its reporting beat. A conference could create a feed for posts containing event-related accounts or terms. A specialized community could use a labeling service or custom client suited to its own needs.

X also offers APIs and developer tools, but its ecosystem is governed by the policies, access levels and commercial decisions of one platform. For a business, that can make X’s experience more standardized; for an independent developer, it can mean less control over the underlying social infrastructure.

Commercial social-publishing, analytics, API and custom-feed tools may eventually become useful additions to a Bluesky workflow. The specific integration and affiliate program should be verified before recommending a particular product.

Monetization: which platform is better for creators?

X currently has the clearer built-in monetization path. Its Premium documentation includes creator subscriptions and eligibility to apply for creator-revenue-sharing programs, although eligibility requirements, payment rules and availability can change. Premium is not a guarantee of income, and a checkmark or subscription does not automatically produce an audience.

Bluesky’s strongest documented advantages are control, identity and discovery rather than a mature platform-wide creator-revenue system. A creator can use Bluesky to build an audience, direct people to a website, support a publication or promote external products and services, but the research does not establish an equivalent built-in monetization stack to X’s Premium-linked programs.

Choose X when native platform monetization is a priority. Choose Bluesky when you are more concerned with building an audience around an open-web identity that is not as tightly bound to one company’s feed and account system. In either case, an owned website, email list or membership system remains useful because platform rules and reach can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should use Bluesky?

Bluesky is a strong fit if you:

  • want to choose among different feeds instead of relying mainly on one recommendation system;
  • care about open-web principles and protocol-based interoperability;
  • want the option of a domain-based social handle;
  • are interested in developer tools, bots, custom feeds or alternative clients;
  • prefer configurable moderation and labeling layers; or
  • want to explore a growing network with a different culture and product philosophy from X.

It may be less suitable as your only platform if your work depends on X’s existing audience, mature Communities and Lists, Premium features, long-form or long-video tools, or established creator programs.

Who should use X?

X is a strong fit if you:

  • already have a large, relevant audience there;
  • need broad public reach across established professional, media or interest communities;
  • rely on direct messaging, Lists, Communities or integrated search and discovery;
  • want longer posts or longer video uploads through Premium;
  • need a more mature built-in creator and subscription toolkit; or
  • prefer one integrated service rather than assembling feeds and moderation layers.

X’s advantages come with less architectural choice. You are using the product, ranking systems, policies and account infrastructure provided by X.

Should you leave X for Bluesky?

Do not make the decision based only on which service is being discussed more enthusiastically. First identify what you actually need from social media:

  • Public reach: Which platform already contains the people you need to reach?
  • Discovery: Do you want one integrated recommendation system or several selectable feeds?
  • Private communication: Do your work and communities depend on the messaging tools you already use?
  • Publishing: Are short posts enough, or do you need longer text and video options?
  • Community management: Do you rely on X Communities, Lists or similar organizational features?
  • Identity: Would a domain-based handle be valuable?
  • Income: Do you need native subscriptions or creator-revenue programs?
  • Control: How important are custom feeds, alternative clients and selectable moderation?

If your answers are split, switching is not the only choice. You can maintain X for existing reach and use Bluesky for open-web discovery, custom feeds or a different moderation experience.

How to move from X to Bluesky without losing your workflow

  1. List the functions you use on X. Record the accounts, Lists, Communities, direct-message workflows, saved resources, publishing tools and monetization features that matter.
  2. Decide whether you are switching or cross-posting. A complete move requires more rebuilding. Cross-posting preserves reach but adds management work.
  3. Create and brand the Bluesky account. Use a consistent name, profile image, biography and website. Consider a custom domain handle only if it genuinely helps your identity.
  4. Rebuild your important network manually. Do not assume that followers, Lists, Communities or X relationships will transfer automatically. Follow the people and publications whose updates you actually need.
  5. Install feeds deliberately. Begin with a small number of relevant feeds rather than adding every available option. Review what each feed includes and how it changes your timeline.
  6. Set moderation and labeling preferences. Start with the default protections, then add or adjust labels as you learn which content you want to see, hide or flag.
  7. Test your publishing workflow. Check links, images, video, replies, mentions and cross-posting before making Bluesky your primary channel.
  8. Preserve independent contact points. Keep your website, newsletter, mailing list or other owned audience channel current. Neither Bluesky nor X should be your only connection to an audience.
  9. Review monetization separately. Moving an audience to Bluesky does not transfer X Premium benefits, subscriptions or creator-program eligibility.

A practical two-platform strategy

Using both services can be sensible when they serve different jobs. For example, a journalist or organization might use X to reach an established audience and monitor conversations that remain concentrated there, while using Bluesky to participate in custom feeds, domain-based identity and a protocol-oriented community.

That approach has costs: two profiles must be maintained, conversations may split across networks and identical cross-posting can feel repetitive. It works best when each account has a clear purpose rather than treating one as an abandoned duplicate.

A simple division might be:

  • X: established audience, breaking reach, Communities, Lists, Premium publishing and creator tools.
  • Bluesky: custom discovery, open-web identity, developer experimentation and selectable moderation.

This is a practical strategy, not a platform rule. Your audience, industry and required features should determine the balance.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bluesky the new Twitter?

Bluesky has a similar public-posting format, but it is not simply a replacement copy of Twitter. Its defining difference is the AT Protocol, which supports selectable feeds, portable identity and composable moderation. X remains a more mature centralized platform with broader integrated features.

Is Bluesky free to use?

The research for this article describes ordinary use through the standard Bluesky app and does not identify a general subscription requirement. Optional costs may arise if you choose a custom domain, a third-party service or another tool connected to your workflow.

Can I move my X followers to Bluesky?

There is no basis for assuming that an X audience, Lists, Communities, Premium benefits or creator-program eligibility will transfer automatically. You should expect to rebuild important relationships and explain the new account to your existing audience.

Does Bluesky have an algorithm?

Yes. Bluesky uses algorithms, but it lets users choose among more feeds and allows developers to create feed generators. X also uses algorithms through For You and other recommendation systems, while providing controls such as Following and Lists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which platform is better for making money?

X has the more mature documented built-in monetization stack, including Premium-linked creator subscriptions and eligibility pathways for revenue programs. Bluesky may help you build and direct an audience, but it should not be treated as having identical native creator-income features.

Do I need to buy a domain to use Bluesky?

No. A domain is optional. It can be useful for a journalist, publication, organization, business or creator who wants a handle connected to an owned web identity, but a normal Bluesky account does not require one.

X has the more mature documented built-in monetization stack, including Premium-linked creator subscriptions and eligibility pathways for revenue programs. Bluesky’s strengths are audience-building, identity and discovery rather than an equivalent native revenue system.

Do I need to buy a domain to use Bluesky?

No. A custom domain is optional. It can connect a journalist, publication, organization, business or creator to an owned web identity, but ordinary Bluesky use does not require one.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Bluesky is a different model of social networking, not merely “the new Twitter.” Choose it for open-protocol values, custom feeds, portable identity and configurable moderation. Choose X for established reach, integrated media and messaging, Communities, Lists, Premium features and a more mature monetization system. For many readers, maintaining both is the most practical answer.
