A “blood moon” is the reddish-looking Moon during a total lunar eclipse—not a separate kind of eclipse. The astronomy is an alignment of the Sun, Earth and Moon; stories about a creature swallowing the Moon, a threatened ruler, or a wounded Moon are cultural interpretations of that sight. They vary widely: some accounts describe danger or omens, while others emphasize healing, respect or renewal.

What is a blood moon?

During a lunar eclipse, Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, and Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon. The popular phrase “blood moon” refers to the reddish appearance the Moon can take on during a total lunar eclipse. It names an appearance, not a distinct astronomical event. The color has also acquired modern cultural and apocalyptic associations that go beyond the astronomy. BBC Future explains the term and its associations; NASA’s historical account describes eclipse observations and interpretations at NASA’s lunar eclipse page.

Why did people describe the Moon as being swallowed?

An eclipse can make a familiar, bright Moon darken or appear to change color in a striking way. In societies without a shared physical explanation for the event, stories gave the change an agent and a meaning. A beast, demon or deity might be said to attack or swallow the Moon; elsewhere, the eclipse signaled a relationship between celestial beings or called for a ritual response. These accounts are not evidence that every community feared eclipses, or that a single story was shared across a whole region.

Stories of attack, danger and omens

Inca accounts: a jaguar attacks the Moon

BBC Science Focus reports an Inca account in which a jaguar attacks and eats the red Moon. The source says people made noise in response. This is a secondary-source summary of an Inca tradition; it should not be generalized to all Andean peoples. BBC Science Focus’s overview of lunar-eclipse myths summarizes the story.

Mesopotamia: danger to the king

BBC Science Focus describes a Mesopotamian interpretation of a lunar eclipse as an assault on the king, and reports a practice of appointing a proxy king to face the danger. The specific proxy-king detail comes from that secondary overview. Separately, the National Academies Press discusses the historical importance of Babylonian and other records of eclipses; those records show that careful observation and ominous interpretation could coexist. National Academies Press, “The Celestial Sphere”.

Rahu: the Moon swallowed and released

BBC Science Focus recounts a Hindu myth in which Rahu swallows the Sun or Moon, offering a story-based explanation for an eclipse. The same overview mentions eclipse-related practices reported among some people in India. Neither the story nor those practices should be treated as universal among Hindus or across India: belief and observance vary among individuals and communities.

Ominous eclipses in ancient records

NASA reports that around 1200 B.C.E., scribes in Anyang, China, recorded eclipses on oracle bones. NASA renders one record as: “The Sun has been eaten.” The quotation is NASA’s translation, not an independently verified translation here. NASA says astronomers later used the records to study changes in Earth’s rotation. This is one example of how an alarming image could also become part of a record useful to later observers. NASA’s eclipse history.

NASA also reproduces Plutarch’s account of a lunar eclipse during the 413 BCE siege of Syracuse. Plutarch wrote that the eclipse “was not easy to be comprehended” and that observers “concluded it to be ominous, and a divine intimation of some heavy calamities.” This is Plutarch’s translated passage as displayed by NASA, describing the interpretation of the eclipse in that account—not proof that all observers understood it the same way. Not every account casts the eclipse as a threat

Healing the Moon

BBC Science Focus summarizes Hupa and Luiseño accounts in which the Moon is wounded or ill and receives healing. This framing makes the eclipse part of a story of care and recovery rather than simply an attack to fear. The details here are reported through a secondary overview, not presented as a complete account of either community’s teachings. BBC Science Focus.

Resolving conflict between Sun and Moon

The same overview describes a Batammaliba account from Togo and Benin in which the Sun and Moon are in conflict and the community encourages them to make peace. Here, people respond not by fighting a force threatening the Moon, but by helping restore harmony. As with the other summaries on the page, this should be read as an attributed account, not a claim that all people in either country hold one belief. BBC Science Focus.

Contemporary Native perspectives are distinct, not a single doctrine

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian presents accounts from Native contributors whose perspectives differ. A Laguna–Acoma Pueblo contributor describes an eclipse as a time of transformation and prayer, saying, “I was told that they are a time of transformation and not to fear them.” A Southern Paiute contributor frames it in terms of love and reflection: “It is a day of giving, of life, of love, for without the sun and moon we would be in misery just as our legend tells us.” These are attributed testimonies, not statements on behalf of all Pueblo or Paiute people. Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.

The Smithsonian page also includes a Shoshone Bannock contributor’s recollection of a family practice involving closed windows and prayed-over water, as well as statements from Nakoda, Ho-Chunk, Crow and Pawnee contributors. The variety matters: individual testimony can show how a person or family understands an eclipse, but it cannot establish a uniform tribal belief or how widely a practice is followed today.

Diné protocols

The Smithsonian page relays a response from the Institute for Diné Culture, Philosophy and Government. It describes the Sun and Moon as sacred and presents protocols that include staying inside and refraining from eating or drinking during an eclipse. This is the institute’s stated perspective; Diné readers seeking guidance about current practice should consult Diné sources directly. Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.

Observation and interpretation can belong to the same history

Eclipse records are not only evidence of fear or myth. NASA describes ancient Chinese observations and Maya astronomical documentation, while the National Academies Press chapter discusses Babylonian and other historical records. Close attention to the sky could serve practical record-keeping and sophisticated astronomy even when an eclipse also carried religious, political or cultural meaning. NASA; National Academies Press.

Claims linking biblical language about the “moon turned to blood” to a particular historical lunar eclipse are uncertain in NASA’s account, so the phrase should not be presented as a securely identified report of one specific event. NASA’s eclipse history.

What these traditions show—and what they do not

  • The physical event has one astronomical explanation: a lunar eclipse occurs when Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon.
  • Its cultural meanings are not one-size-fits-all: the accounts described here include attack, political danger, omen, transformation, healing and reconciliation.
  • Responses differ: sources describe noise, prayer, seclusion or other protocols, but they do not establish how common any practice is today.
  • Evidence differs too: ancient records, a later writer’s account, secondary summaries and contemporary community testimony are not interchangeable kinds of evidence.

These stories are most useful when read in their own contexts rather than assembled into a claim that people everywhere feared the Moon’s disappearance. For broader historical context on eclipse records, Duncan Steel’s edited volume Eclipse: The Celestial Phenomenon That Changed the Course of History was published by Joseph Henry Press in 2001.
